Position Overview

This role is structured to provide a balanced experience between Clinical Hepatology Service Delivery and Research in Translational Medicine. The selected candidate will engage in a research initiative under the guidance of Dr. Vishal Patel and his team, concentrating on the rapid diagnostics of infections in patients with cirrhosis. This project, which has secured external funding, aims to tackle the rising challenges of infection-related complications in cirrhosis, particularly in the context of antimicrobial resistance. The candidate will gain exposure to innovative microbiome research being conducted in the Patel laboratory.

Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will participate in clinical duties tailored to their training requirements and the operational needs of the Liver Unit. Clinical responsibilities will encompass:

  • Conducting two outpatient clinics weekly.
  • Engaging in multidisciplinary team meetings and clinical governance activities.
  • Contributing to the research project while fulfilling clinical obligations.

Job Duties

The role involves collaboration with colleagues to ensure comprehensive patient care, which includes:

  • Participating in the provision of treatment and management duties.
  • Sharing responsibility for 24/7 unit coverage on a rotational basis.
  • Engaging in multi-disciplinary meetings and contributing to clinical governance initiatives.
  • Managing outpatient clinic responsibilities as agreed upon with the Care Group management.
  • Supporting the Care Group's research objectives in alignment with the Trust's research and development framework.
  • Participating in audit programs and learning from clinical outcomes.

All activities must align with the contracted service levels and operational plans. The candidate will work collaboratively with clinical and professional colleagues to maintain productivity and enhance job satisfaction within the specialty.

Essential Qualifications and Skills

Applicants must possess:

  • A valid medical qualification.
  • MRCP or equivalent certification.
  • Full registration with the GMC/GDC and a License to Practice.

Additionally, candidates should have completed CMT/IMT and possess registrar-level training in gastroenterology and/or hepatology.

Research and Personal Attributes

Understanding of research principles and governance is essential, along with effective communication skills and a professional demeanor. Previous involvement in research projects and presentations at conferences is desirable.
