Job Overview

The post sits within the Pathology Senior Management & Leadership Team and will provide operational leadership and management to the Pathology Directorate and its associated workforce and services. The post holder will directly operationally manage Pathology Service across four sites; the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Princess Royal Hospital, Worthing Hospital and St Richards Hospital.

Main Responsibilities
  • Provide operational leadership and management to the Pathology Directorate and its associated workforce and services.
  • Directly operationally manage Pathology Service across four sites.
  • Operational deputise for the Head of Pathology.
  • Promote effective governance and ensure the department delivers the highest standard of service.
  • Responsible for ensuring all clinical and non-clinical performance indicators, targets and objectives are met in line with national and local standards.
  • Contribute to the development, delivery and translation of Divisional and Trust clinical service strategies, corporate and divisional objectives and the development and implementation of business plans and service developments.
  • Lead in assessing the capacity for demand working with operational and professional leaders in the department.
  • Lead on the implementation of a robust performance management reporting system, including contribution to the divisional strategy.
  • Direct line management for 3 cross-site areas; Support Services, Point of Care and Business Management.
  • Be accountable for the delivery of clinical and technical services within the Directorate.
  • Lead in assessing the capacity and demand for services.
  • Ensure appropriate risk management processes are reviewed and implemented to support Quality Management processes and compliance to regulatory and legislative requirements in Pathology, including UKAS, UKHSA, MHRA, HTA, etc.
Key Working Relationships

The post holder will develop effective partnerships with internal/external stakeholders ensuring effective liaison and partnership working with commissioners is developed and sustained.

Person Specification

The post holder will have:

  • A first degree or equivalent in a relevant subject.
  • Extensive up-to-date knowledge of the NHS.
  • Extensive up-to-date knowledge of pathology.
  • Evidence of CPD.
  • A Masters degree level qualification in Management or Health related subject or equivalent knowledge.
  • Experience in a senior management role.
  • Demonstrable previous success in leading and delivering change and performance initiatives.
  • Experience of engagement with workforce colleagues where you have driven strategic plans forward to the point of delivery, establishing clear work priorities, delegating effectively, ensuring a capability to deliver, monitoring performance and giving feedback.
  • Knowledge and understanding of National Development Strategies, delivery of NHS Healthcare and pathology services.
  • Knowledge understanding of Clinical Governance and risk management systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of recruitment and retention of staff and experience of successful deployment.
  • Proven ability to analyse complex problems and to develop and successfully implement practical and workable solutions to address them.
  • Ability to think and plan successfully in a comparable role strategically, tactically and creatively, and to prioritise work programs in the face of competing demands.
  • A confident and demonstrable track record in using quantitative, qualitative and financial information to inform delivery planning and in monitoring performance.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of human resource policy and procedures.
Desirable Criteria

  • Project management qualification.
  • Experience of working in an Acute Teaching Trust.
  • Experience of working successfully in a comparable role.
