Position Overview

The Consultant in Gynaecological Oncology will collaborate with the oncology team to deliver a thorough clinical service for patients. This encompasses providing outpatient services through specialized clinics and day-case units where Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatments are administered, alongside inpatient care on the primary adult oncology wards.

The Gynaecology Disease Group, under the leadership of a distinguished professor, comprises a team of Consultant Medical Oncologists dedicated to managing Ovarian and Endometrial cancers within the regional cancer network. Systemic therapy is administered centrally or at outreach clinics in accordance with established protocols. Radiotherapy services are provided at leading facilities.

This group places a strong emphasis on research, supported by a robust portfolio of systemic therapy trials, with the assistance of Research Nurses and Clinical Trial Administrators.

All consultants within the Disease Group function as part of a multi-disciplinary team, which includes Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Clinicians, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Clinical Fellows, Specialist Trainees, Pharmacists, and Research Nurses.

Main Responsibilities

The role entails:

  • Overseeing the management of patients with Gynaecological cancer receiving standard therapies, including treatment decisions and ongoing care.
  • Engaging in all pertinent aspects of clinical governance, ensuring protocols, guidelines, and clinical audits are current.
  • Contributing to ongoing research initiatives and identifying new opportunities to enhance research within the team.
  • Developing and revising evidence-based protocols for patient care and managing the associated administrative responsibilities.
  • Maintaining a level of continuing professional development in line with the recommendations of relevant medical authorities.
  • Actively participating in the education and training of junior doctors and other multi-disciplinary team members in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Job Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be stationed at The Christie and will provide senior input in the following areas:

  • Outpatient clinics
  • Chemotherapy Services
  • Inpatient Services, including support for specialized care services
  • Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings focused on Gynaecology

The responsibilities include:

  • Management of patients with gynaecological cancer undergoing standard therapies and clinical trials, including treatment decisions and ongoing care.
  • Conducting ward rounds for gynaecological medical oncology patients.
  • Developing protocols to enhance inpatient management of gynaecological oncology patients.
  • Supporting specialized care services from both inpatient and outpatient perspectives.
  • Contributing to current research projects and exploring new research opportunities.
  • Revising and developing evidence-based protocols for patient care and managing related administrative duties.
  • Maintaining professional development in accordance with medical standards.
  • Participating in the education of medical students and providing lectures for postgraduate programs.
  • Actively contributing to the training of junior doctors and other team members.
  • Engaging in clinical audits as part of the medical staff committee.

The successful candidate will receive administrative support and have access to a well-equipped office with necessary IT facilities.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

The Trust is dedicated to supporting CPD requirements as outlined by medical governing bodies and is committed to providing both time and financial resources for these activities.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • MRCP or equivalent qualification
  • GMC registration
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register
  • Evidence of ethical research relevant to oncology
  • Extensive experience in Oncology, particularly in gynaecological cancer

Desirable Qualifications

  • Higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent)
  • Recent publications in peer-reviewed journals

Essential Experience

  • Independently managing Oncology patients
  • Teaching experience for undergraduates
  • Experience in clinical audit
