Job Title: Patient Safety Manager

We are seeking an experienced Patient Safety Manager to join our team at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. As a key member of our safety team, you will play a vital role in ensuring the provision of efficient and responsive central patient safety functions and contributing to the development of the Trust approach to patient safety and the patient safety incident response framework (PSIRF).

Main Responsibilities:
  • Lead patient safety at UCLH, ensuring the provision of efficient and responsive central patient safety functions.
  • Contribute to the development of the Trust approach to patient safety and the patient safety incident response framework (PSIRF).
  • Provide expert support and undertake patient safety incident investigations (PSIIs) as needed.
  • Lead on incident management and will also be (or will become) a patient safety specialist.

Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience
  • Evidence of successful study at a higher level within a specialist environment of serious incidents or project management or equivalent specialist knowledge
  • A clinical background/qualification
  • Significant and demonstrable experience of working in the NHS at a senior level in relevant fields (e.g. serious incident management, PSIRF implementation)
  • Substantial experience of staff leadership and management across a range of functions
  • Significant experience of working in a large and complex health environment at a senior level and directly influencing at corporate level

You will also need:

  • Well-organised, methodical and analytical
  • Ability to plan and organise a varying workload effectively to meet deadlines in the short and long term and react to changing demands and work priorities
  • Ability to make decisions and solve complex problems
  • Ability to develop strong professional networks
  • The ability to manage complex and often conflicting issues
  • Ability to present complex information in an understandable and concise manner, drawing on different writing styles including reports, business plans, action plans, summaries and policies as necessary
  • Current in-depth awareness of incident management issues and the ability to keep abreast of ongoing developments in the field
  • Able to deliver an effective incident management function in the Trust which complies with national standards and reflects new developments
  • Good understanding of patient safety and the patient safety incident response framework, clinical governance policy framework and agenda

You will also need to demonstrate the ability to meet Trust Values of safety, kindness, teamwork and improving.

You will also need to demonstrate excellent strategic communication skills, ability to deal confidently and appropriately with staff at all levels of the organisation, including at a very senior level, ability to negotiate with and influence front line and management staff at all levels, including senior managers and directors, ability to work within a team as a team member or leader, including the ability to enthuse and motivate reporting staff, ability to work in a collaborative and facilitative working style, articulate, influential and persuasive, able to encourage and enthuse others, ability to advise on appropriate methods of problem solving, ability to work across boundaries and breakdown barriers, confident when speaking in public and at large meetings.

You will also need to demonstrate experience of active and appropriate staff management of directly reporting staff, in line with Trust policies, experience of appraisal and performance management of staff by setting team and individual objectives.

You will also need to demonstrate proficiency in the use of MS Office applications: Microsoft Word, Outlook, Access, Powerpoint and Excel.

You will also need to demonstrate a demonstratable understanding of the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion and/or Knowledge of the NHS obligations under the Equality Act 2010 and the Public Sector Equality Duties.
