London, Greater London, United Kingdom E1 EDF Trading Ltd Full time

Job Overview

Department

The Short-Term Analytical Team operates with a structured approach, comprising:

  • A team of 6 market analysts and a manager dedicated to the French Desk during weekdays. This includes:
    • 3 analysts focusing on the Intraday horizon in Paris.
    • 3 analysts concentrating on Day Ahead and Week Ahead horizons in London.
  • A group of 7 analysts, a deputy, and a manager committed to optimizing the EDF portfolio for Day Ahead and Week Ahead horizons, working 7 days a week in Paris. The analyst on duty models the EDF system's available flexibility and translates it into EPEX orders for economically efficient optimization in the Day Ahead electricity market.
  • The Analytics Engineering Manager along with 2 software engineers.

Position Purpose

This role is situated in London. To enhance returns from the month-ahead to day-ahead wholesale power markets, whether through EDF generation assets or proprietary trading, traders depend on timely, commercially-focused analysis.

In collaboration with both the short-term analysts responsible for EDF portfolio optimization in Paris and the power traders in London, the Short-Term Power Market Analyst will undertake dual responsibilities encompassing both operational and developmental tasks.

Furthermore, the analyst is expected to step back from operational activities and modeling to identify improvement opportunities and contribute to defining the team's objectives. Participation in the training of junior analysts is also a key expectation.

Core Operational Responsibilities

Market Analysis:

  • Deliver data analytics and risk assessments on the short-term power market to the desk.
  • Assist the Short-Term desk with price forecasts and trading strategies.

EDF System Risk Analysis:

  • Monitor Day-Ahead and Week-Ahead optimization shifts.
  • Relay time-sensitive information to traders in London.
  • Ensure adherence to regulatory standards, including REMIT, through consistent application of established processes.

Core Development/Modeling Responsibilities

The Short-Term Power Market Analyst oversees the entire lifecycle of applications or models, from research and design to development, implementation, and maintenance.

The analyst operates autonomously on projects and is accountable for critical applications.

Examples of models/applications/solutions include:

  • Fundamental and quantitative models (statistical, data science-driven) to enhance market behavior anticipation and improve price forecasting models, addressing all market components such as load forecasts, competitor orders, availabilities, etc.
  • Workflow automation.
  • Data visualization through PowerBI or web applications.

The analyst is also responsible for enhancing the robustness of team applications by incorporating unit tests on critical components and refactoring unstable functions utilized in projects. Active participation in peer reviews of junior analysts is essential to share best practices.

Required Experience

The ability to perform under pressure, maintain timeliness and accuracy, and comprehend the broader commercial implications of work are vital for success in this role.

The analyst will leverage expertise to support short-term power traders while ensuring effective operational relationships with EDF asset managers. Proactivity in continuously improving existing processes, tools, and models is expected to enhance overall management of the EDF portfolio and wholesale market positions.

Additionally, a proactive approach to researching market modeling improvements is necessary for success in this position.

Technical Requirements

Proficiency in both French and English.

A master's degree is preferred, ideally with a strong emphasis on statistics or mathematics.

Experience in developing stochastic or deterministic optimization procedures/models.

Advanced skills in:

  • Data science.
  • Python (API, data management, statistical modeling).
  • Web development (JavaScript).
  • Source code management (Git).

Comprehensive understanding of power market operations, including:

  • Power asset management and optimization.
  • Power market coupling algorithms.

Candidate Profile

In addition to possessing strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and enthusiasm, candidates should adopt a commercial mindset in their responsibilities. A flexible approach to problem-solving and the ability to work effectively under pressure are essential.

Candidates will also be expected to demonstrate strong communication skills and the confidence to collaborate effectively with both power traders and asset managers.

Working Hours:

40 hours per week, Monday to Friday.
