Short-Term Power Risk Analyst
Shell Energy Europe & Africa (SE-EA) aims to establish itself as a significant player in the European Power Markets, necessitating proficient oversight of long-term, challenging-to-hedge profit and loss (PnL) elements arising from physical transactions. The Short-Term Power Risk & Pricing team is responsible for managing the risk associated with these illiquid exposures from asset-backed agreements, which include renewable energy and flexible resources such as Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and thermal assets, all monetized by the short-term trading units in the UK and European power sectors.
This role is integral to the front office, serving as a crucial link between short-term trading outcomes and long-term deal commitments by managing the pricing of unhedgeable PnL components from valuation to execution, while establishing benchmarks to assess and improve the financial performance of short-term trading desks.
Key Responsibilities
You will be tasked with the following:
- Enhancing model-driven decision-making while managing the asset portfolio to address long-term, hard-to-hedge exposures from asset-backed transactions, including risks associated with renewable imbalances, within-month volume and price shape risks, intraday and balancing mechanisms, and ancillary services from deal initiation to execution.
- Collaborating with Power Fundamentals and Forecasting teams to formulate long-term fundamental perspectives for intraday price scenarios that correlate with renewable forecast inaccuracies and day-ahead pricing.
- Working alongside Quantitative Analysts and Structuring teams to ensure uniform modeling and valuation of these illiquid risk factors from pre-deal assessments to post-deal evaluations.
- Cooperating with Market Risk and controlling teams on reserves and valuation for reporting throughout the deal lifecycle, ensuring PnL realization.
- Contributing to the development of models for pricing these illiquid risk elements, integrating portfolio weights and risk tolerance into long-term deal evaluations.
- Assuming responsibility for the models utilized in PnL generation within the short-term trading domain, ensuring their precision and relevance to trading strategies.
- Assisting in the creation of short-term trading algorithms, ensuring their effective application and benchmarking against market performance.
- Providing continuous feedback to short-term trading teams based on benchmarking outcomes, collaborating with traders to refine strategies and enhance overall trading desk performance.
- Utilizing expertise in intraday, balancing, and ancillary services markets to improve trading strategies and risk management practices.
We seek candidates with substantial experience in trading or quantitative analysis within intraday, balancing, and ancillary services markets, possessing comprehensive asset and product knowledge. The following qualifications are desirable:
- A degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Sciences, Economics, or a related discipline.
- Strong quantitative, commercial, and communication capabilities.
- Proficiency in managing large datasets and deriving actionable insights for decision-making in a dynamic environment.
- Excellent skills in MS Office and proficiency in at least one programming language (preferably Python).
- Experience with GB or European Intraday Power & Ancillary Services Market Fundamentals is advantageous.
Flexible Working Arrangements
We support flexible working options, subject to local regulations. If you are interested, please indicate your preferred flexible working arrangements in your application.
