Position Overview

The Oxford Health NHS Trust is seeking a dedicated and experienced Senior Speech and Language Therapist to enhance our dynamic and collaborative multi-disciplinary team.

The successful candidate will spearhead the development and delivery of the Speech and Language Therapy (SLT) services within our Adult Autism Diagnostic and Intervention framework. This role is situated within our advanced mental health facilities, providing a supportive environment for both staff and clients.

In this capacity, you will conduct comprehensive diagnostic evaluations and implement tailored intervention strategies for individuals on the autism spectrum, both in individual and group formats. Your expertise will guide clinical practices, offering specialized advice to colleagues regarding the management of patients with diverse communication needs.

We encourage innovative approaches and participation in Quality Improvement initiatives, with potential focus areas including Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), emotional regulation strategies, and communication aids.

This role presents a diverse and stimulating work environment, allowing for collaboration within multi-disciplinary teams. The ideal candidate will possess HCPC registration and demonstrate a proven track record as a Speech and Language Therapist across various contexts.

The position will also involve strong connections with the broader Allied Health Professional (AHP) leadership within the organization. Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality, evidence-based SLT assessments and intervention programs tailored to client needs.
  • Independently manage the assessment and treatment of communication disorders for clients within the mental health framework.
  • Provide specialized assessment and intervention for clients with autism and communication challenges.
  • Collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team to diagnose, develop, implement, and monitor effective interventions for patients within the autism service.
  • Advise team members on SLT interventions that cater to the unique needs of clients.
  • Actively participate in multidisciplinary meetings, clinical team discussions, and Care and Treatment Reviews (CTR).
  • Design and evaluate training programs for professionals and team members regarding communication and SLT interventions.
  • Supervise and mentor students on placement.
  • Oversee the professional development of Speech and Language Therapists, assistants, and volunteers.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary assessments and documentation reflecting specialized knowledge of this client demographic.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement high standards of assessment and intervention for clients referred to the service.
  • Conduct thorough assessments to identify client strengths and needs, coordinating suitable SLT interventions based on established models and evidence-based practices.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Qualified Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Registered member of the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists (RCSLT).
  • Registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Knowledge

Essential:

  • Experience in managing complex caseloads and conditions.
  • Familiarity with evidence-based assessment tools and interventions relevant to mental health and autism.
  • In-depth knowledge of communication needs for individuals with complex profiles, including autism spectrum disorder and mental health challenges.
  • Specialized skills in relevant areas of practice.

Experience

Essential:

  • Significant clinical experience as a registered Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Demonstrated expertise in relevant specialist clinical areas.
  • Completion of RCSLT Newly Qualified Practitioner competencies.
  • Experience in communication assessments and interventions.
  • Experience in autism assessments and interventions.

Desirable:

  • Experience working with adults in mental health settings.
  • Experience in multi-disciplinary collaboration.
  • Familiarity with social communication resources and emotional regulation strategies.
  • Experience in psychoeducational group work.

Skills

Essential:

  • Evidence-based, reflective practice and clinical reasoning skills in assessment and treatment.
  • Effective communication skills with clients, professionals, and team members.
  • Ability to organize and manage workloads effectively.
  • Strong leadership capabilities.
  • Experience supervising registered and non-registered staff.
