Prison Officer Role Overview

As a Prison Officer with Serco, you will play a vital role in ensuring the health, safety, and wellbeing of prisoners, staff, and visitors in our prisons. You will be at the forefront of reducing reoffending rates amongst prisoners, making a meaningful and vital contribution to society.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise prisoners in all aspects of prison wing activity, promoting a safe and structured environment.
  • Oversee work and education programmes, encouraging prisoners to participate and develop valuable skills.
  • Operational matters such as prisoner headcounts, prison cell searching, security, and administrative processes.
  • Manage prisoners who are at risk of self-harm, providing support and guidance.

Selection Process

Our selection process includes an online assessment, interview, role play, written exercise, competency-based interview, and maths assessments. You will also undergo a fitness test, which consists of a bleep test, agility test, shield hold test, and grip test.

Once you have passed the assessment, you will be invited to attend a 4-week Initial Training Course (ITC) at the prison, which requires 100% attendance. This course provides high-quality training, including a Diploma in Custodial Care, First Aid, and Control and Restraint training.
