Prison Officer Role

As a Prison Officer with Serco, you will play a vital role in ensuring the health, safety, and wellbeing of prisoners, staff, and visitors in our prisons. You will be at the forefront of reducing reoffending rates amongst prisoners and contributing to a safer and more rehabilitative environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise prisoners in all aspects of prison wing activity, promoting a positive and supportive environment.
  • Oversee work and education programmes, encouraging prisoners to participate and develop valuable skills.
  • Operational matters such as prisoner headcounts, prison cell searching, security, and administrative processes.
  • Manage prisoners who are at risk of self-harm, providing support and guidance to ensure their safety and wellbeing.

Requirements
  • A strong commitment to public safety and rehabilitation.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing situations.
  • Physical fitness and ability to pass a fitness test.
Selection Process

Our selection process includes an online assessment, interview, role play, written exercise, and maths assessments. You will also undergo a fitness test, which consists of a bleep test, agility test, shield hold test, and grip test.

Once you have passed the assessment, you will be invited to attend a 4-week Initial Training Course (ITC) at the prison, which requires 100% attendance. This comprehensive training programme will equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in this role.
