Prison Officer Role

As a Prison Officer with Serco, you will play a vital role in ensuring the health, safety, and wellbeing of prisoners, staff, and visitors in our prisons. You will be at the forefront of reducing reoffending rates amongst prisoners and contributing to a safer and more rehabilitative environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise prisoners in all aspects of prison wing activity, promoting a positive and supportive environment.
  • Oversee work and education programs, encouraging prisoners to participate and develop valuable skills.
  • Operational matters such as prisoner headcounts, prison cell searching, security, and administrative processes.
  • Manage prisoners who are at risk of self-harm, providing support and guidance to ensure their safety and wellbeing.

What to Expect

You will be required to undergo a -week Initial Training Course (ITC) at the Prison, which includes 8 weeks of classroom-based training and 2 weeks of shadowing to give you a real taste of life on the job. You will also be required to complete a Diploma in Custodial Care, First Aid, and undergo Control and Restraint training.

We operate /7, all year round, and you will be required to cover shifts on days, evenings, weekends, nights, and bank holidays. However, we value the importance of work-life balance and operate on a rota basis that allows you the flexibility to enjoy meaningful time off to do the things you enjoy and love.

This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 4, and all offers of employment are subject to security clearance checks and satisfactory employment references. You will be required to provide 5 years of employment and education history as part of these checks.
