Position Overview
Are you ready to advance your nursing career? We invite you to explore an exciting opportunity to join our dedicated Rheumatology Team. We are in search of a passionate and proactive individual who will seamlessly integrate into our established group of specialist nurses, delivering exceptional care to patients with a diverse range of Rheumatological disorders.
This position is classified under Pay Band 6, with provisions from NHS Terms and Conditions of Service Annex 21 applicable until the successful completion of an 18-month development period.
[Annex 21 (ii) applies to those with more than one but less than two years prior to completing training: 70 percent of the pay band maximum of the qualified rate, approximately £29,000 per annum.]
The successful candidate will be expected to complete the following training and competencies within an 18-month timeframe under the Agenda for Change Annex 21 to fulfill Band 6 requirements:
- Completion of a Leadership Course (provided by RJAH)
- Completion of the Rheumatology Core Skills/Specialist Nurse Skills Course provided by the British Society for Rheumatology (BSA)
- Completion of RCN Rheumatology Band 6 Competencies
- Participation in and completion of one audit
Key Responsibilities
Our service operates across Shropshire, utilizing a Hub and Spoke model with Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital serving as the Hub, complemented by various outreach sites throughout the county.
We seek an experienced nurse with a keen interest in Rheumatology or relevant experience in a rheumatology service, who can effectively integrate into our dedicated and industrious nursing team.
Upon successful completion of the development period, the postholder will play a vital role in enhancing the delivery of our high-quality service. You will collaborate closely with Consultant Rheumatologists, Specialist Doctors, other Band 7/6 nurses, physiotherapists, and other extended scope practitioners as part of our cohesive team.

Job Duties
The primary objective of this role is to deliver a comprehensive rheumatology service by:
- Conducting independent patient clinics in collaboration with consultants.
- Offering guidance and support to colleagues, patients, and caregivers.
- Engaging in the operation of a specialist nurse-led telephone advice line for patients.
Responsibilities Include
1. Providing specialized nursing services for individuals with rheumatology conditions.
2. Assisting in the development of specialized nursing assessments, evidence-based interventions, and support for clients with rheumatology conditions.
3. Participating in nurse clinics, working in tandem with consultant clinics, managing follow-up patients according to established protocols, targeting treatment, and adhering to agreed competencies within a defined development plan. Clinics are conducted at RJAH (service hub) and various outreach locations.
4. Assessing patients with rheumatoid/inflammatory arthritis using the DAS 28/PSARC score to evaluate eligibility for and response to anti-TNF therapy.
5. Completing funding applications for anti-TNF treatment in accordance with commissioning guidelines.
6. Collaborating with nursing staff on relevant wards, where there are dedicated Rheumatology beds and specialist nurses delivering day case infusion services, to provide management advice and support.
7. Serving as a resource for patients and other professionals, offering advice, support, and information through a dedicated patient telephone advice line.
8. Assisting in the provision of educational support regarding rheumatology-related issues for colleagues, patients, and their caregivers.
9. Promoting best practices in alignment with relevant quality care standards and NICE guidelines.
10. Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of consultants, nurses, healthcare assistants, therapists, pharmacists, dietitians, and administrative staff. Attending monthly county rheumatology meetings and specialist nurse meetings is expected.
11. Referring patients to other members of the multidisciplinary team as necessary and to community support services as required.
12. Maintaining accurate and up-to-date patient records in compliance with professional standards and the Data Protection Act.
13. Conducting patient satisfaction surveys and participating in clinical audits to meet organizational and unit requirements.
14. Engaging in service improvement initiatives.
The postholder will be expected to manage four clinics weekly (if working full-time) across multiple sites. Responsibilities will include overseeing the help and advice line, monitoring blood tests as part of DMARD monitoring, providing drug education, conducting pre-treatment screenings, and managing drug funding applications. The postholder will also be expected to provide support and guidance to patients, caregivers, and other professionals.
