London, Greater London, United Kingdom Royal Botanic Gardens Kew Full time

Position Overview

The primary objective of this position is to advance the mission of the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, which focuses on understanding and safeguarding plant and fungal diversity for the benefit of humanity and the sustainability of life on Earth through innovative genomic research.

The successful applicant will join a distinguished, multidisciplinary team led by the Director of Science, Prof. Alexandre Antonelli. This international research collective possesses a wide array of expertise and interests, collaborating on studies related to the evolution and conservation of biodiversity, with a particular emphasis on tropical ecosystems, especially in Brazil's Atlantic Rainforest.

Role Responsibilities

Building upon RBG Kew's extensive background in conservation genomics, phylogenomics, and genome evolution, we are seeking a dedicated researcher to design and execute their own research project in partnership with Professor Antonelli, while also contributing to established projects within the team.

The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in a relevant field such as biodiversity science, phylogenomics, biogeography, evolutionary biology, conservation genetics, or spatial analyses. They should demonstrate the ability to work both collaboratively and independently with genomic data, as well as in data collection and analysis, and the dissemination of findings through reputable journals and conferences.

Essential qualifications include specialized experience in genomic laboratory techniques and bioinformatics, along with a solid understanding of biogeographical analyses and conservation science. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as a strong publication history, are crucial. The role may also involve supervising students and visitors, and candidates should ideally possess experience in training or mentoring, or be willing to develop these skills.

Application Requirements

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Applicants are required to submit a concise 1-page project proposal outlining the scientific inquiries they wish to explore, the genomic data they intend to gather, and their approach to conducting, publishing, and disseminating the research.

Additionally, a comprehensive research CV should be included, detailing publication and funding achievements, as well as other pertinent information that showcases the applicant's qualifications as a research scientist, including any scientific honors and committee memberships.

Benefits

Our exceptional benefits package includes opportunities for ongoing professional development, a generous annual leave policy, flexible working arrangements to support a healthy work-life balance, an Employee Assistance Programme, and additional wellness initiatives such as a cycle-to-work scheme and discounted gym memberships. We also provide a competitive pension plan, an employee discount program, and complimentary access to a variety of national museums and galleries, along with our own stunning gardens.
