Postdoctoral Position in New Guinea Biodiversity Research

London, Greater London, United Kingdom Royal Botanic Gardens Kew Full time

Position Overview

The Royal Botanic Gardens Kew is looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (fixed-term for 18 months) to contribute to the New Guinea Tropical Important Plant Areas (TIPAs) initiative. This role involves creating a comprehensive body of work aimed at enhancing conservation strategies and evaluating the impacts of human activities and climate change on plant diversity, utilizing the TIPAs framework to pinpoint critical regions for plant conservation in Indonesian New Guinea.

Significance of the Role

New Guinea boasts the richest island flora globally, making it essential for the worldwide conservation of plant species. The TIPAs framework has been successfully implemented in Africa and the Americas, and our focus on New Guinea targets the two Indonesian provinces of West Papua. Cataloging the region's plant megadiversity is vital for global conservation efforts aimed at safeguarding tropical forest ecosystems, their carbon reserves, and the myriad benefits they provide to health and economies.

Work Environment

This position is primarily based at Kew, with the possibility of flexible home working arrangements, contingent on operational needs. The interview process will take place at Kew Gardens.

Application Requirements

Applicants are required to submit an online application along with a research-focused CV that highlights their publication history, funding achievements, and other pertinent details that showcase their qualifications as a research scientist, including any honors, committee memberships, and PhD supervision experience.

Job Responsibilities

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be part of the Asia Team within the Accelerated Taxonomy Priority, situated in the Herbarium at Kew. This team is dedicated to exploring, documenting, and conserving the flora and habitats of eastern Malesia, including New Guinea. The New Guinea TIPAs project aims to bolster biodiversity conservation efforts in West Papua by designating TIPAs.

In collaboration with project partners, the successful candidate will conduct analyses to support and inform conservation initiatives in the area. The role entails working closely with Kew staff, students, and Indonesian partners from the West Papuan Provincial Government and the University of Papua (UNIPA), as well as the Forestry Department.

Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess a PhD in a relevant scientific field and demonstrate strong data manipulation skills. Proficiency in data analysis using various techniques, excellent communication abilities (including writing for publication), and experience in independently managing specific research projects are essential. A keen interest in Southeast Asian flora, particularly that of eastern Malesia, is advantageous, with opportunities available to enhance skills in plant identification. Familiarity with IUCN red list criteria and an understanding of spatial prioritization designations (such as KBAs and IPAs) is preferred. The successful candidate will be encouraged to advance research using contemporary techniques, potentially encompassing distribution modeling, automated red listing, remote sensing, and conservation prioritization.

Benefits

We offer an exceptional benefits package that includes opportunities for ongoing professional development, generous annual leave, flexible working arrangements to support a healthy work-life balance, an Employee Assistance Programme, and additional wellness initiatives such as a cycle-to-work scheme and discounted gym memberships. Furthermore, we provide a competitive pension plan, an employee discount scheme, and complimentary access to a wide array of national museums and galleries, along with our own stunning gardens at Kew and Wakehurst.
