About the Team

The Antique Arms and Armour department at Bonhams specializes in European and Eastern armor and edged weapons. Our expertise extends to wheel-lock, flintlock, percussion, and pin-fire rifles, guns, pistols, and revolvers. We also offer American firearms from renowned makers like Colt and Winchester, as well as Islamic and Japanese weaponry and armor. Our auctions are held in London and Massachusetts.

About the Role

As the Lead Antique Arms and Armour Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in shaping our department's success. You will be responsible for:

  • Effectively managing a small team of specialists, providing direction and leadership to maximize team efficiency.
  • Cataloging Antique Arms and Armour sales and assisting with the preparation of auction catalogues to meet deadlines.
  • Maintaining budgeted commission levels and ensuring profitability for the department.
  • Possessing a deep understanding of your area of expertise, including weaponry, armor, manufacturers, craftsmen, historical context, and market trends.
  • Cultivating relationships with collectors and individuals with known collections in your field.
  • Actively pursuing new business opportunities for the department through networking and outreach.
  • Developing a comprehensive database of buyers and vendors to facilitate smooth transactions.
  • Fostering strong relationships with trade and professional bodies to enhance the department's reputation and growth.
  • Ensuring that the department fulfills all contractual obligations to both Bonhams buyers and vendors, maintaining high standards of service.
  • Engaging with clients as appropriate to build rapport and foster long-term relationships.
  • Managing the department's budget effectively and allocating resources strategically to achieve optimal results.

About You

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Proven experience in the specialty field of antique arms and armor, or within the auction industry.
  • Established relationships with reputable dealers and collectors in your area of expertise.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, along with strong networking abilities.
  • A detail-oriented and highly organized approach to management.
  • The ability to prioritize tasks effectively and meet strict deadlines consistently.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and the ability to work within our business enterprise software.
  • Willingness to travel as required to achieve departmental goals.
