Primate Conservation Assistant Curator

Role Overview – Primate Conservation Assistant Curator
Reporting directly to the Senior Curator, you will oversee the welfare and presentation of our primate species, including great apes. As a leader, you will embody our organizational values, fostering an environment where your colleagues are inspired to achieve excellence. Your responsibilities will include:

• Providing exemplary leadership, promoting a solution-oriented mindset while nurturing a positive team culture.

• Managing all aspects of team dynamics, including training, development, and performance assessments, while adhering to formal HR protocols.

• Ensuring the continuous enhancement of animal care standards in accordance with best practices and regulatory requirements, contributing to ethical decision-making.

• Conducting regular evaluations of animal management practices, proposing and implementing improvements.

• Establishing effective communication channels with fellow curators, animal care staff, and the broader team to ensure the seamless exchange of vital information.

• Assuming Duty Animal Manager responsibilities in collaboration with senior animal team members, particularly during animal emergencies.

• Engaging professionally with external colleagues, especially regarding the international management of primate species.

• Adhering to all organizational policies and procedures, updating Risk Assessments and Standard Operating Procedures as needed.

• Proactively addressing maintenance issues in coordination with the maintenance department.

• Collaborating closely with veterinary professionals on all aspects of animal health care, including preventative and reactive medical care.

• Supporting and facilitating interdepartmental initiatives, including research, education, and animal services.

• Initiating and proposing beneficial research projects related to primate species.

• Actively participating in project planning and implementation, ensuring collaboration with all relevant stakeholders.

• Representing the organization in professional and scientific forums, enhancing our reputation as a leader in animal management, research, and conservation.

• Contributing to the security of the premises and grounds, including participation in emergency response teams.

• Being open to first aid training and participating in the first aid duty roster.

Qualifications – Primate Conservation Assistant Curator

• A minimum of a BSc (or equivalent experience) in an animal or conservation-related field, with relevant qualifications.

• Extensive knowledge of contemporary practices in the care of a diverse range of primate species, including great apes.

• Up-to-date understanding of species management best practices, with a strong commitment to maintaining high standards.

• Proven experience in managing large, complex teams, demonstrating the ability to lead and inspire a diverse workforce.

• In-depth knowledge of breeding program management and the role of modern organizations in species and habitat conservation.

• Exceptional time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively while delivering high-quality work.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant management software.
