**Job summary**:
The Tourism team’s role is to drive growth in the sector: tourism is DCMS’ largest sector accounting for 4% of GVA, £75bn of spend, and directly employing 1.6m people. Between 2016-2019 the sector grew by 11% and is predicted to grow 3% year on year globally to 2030. The visitor economy supports other DCMS sectors: tourism activity in the wider visitor economy supports our arts, heritage & cultural institutions - 25% of cultural activity in the UK counts as ‘tourism’ and similarly for sport. The sector also supports trade and growth through facilitating business travel and business trade shows and conferences.

The UK’s tourism offer is currently skewed towards London and the South East. Our Secretary of State is keen to see tourism benefiting more parts of the UK in order to drive sustainable economic growth and Level Up. Transport connectivity and joining up with place-based government policies such as DCMS’s major cultural and sports events (e.g. City of Culture and Euros 2028) and DLUHC’s Levelling Up Fund, are crucial to achieving this.

The British Tourist Authority, with insight from industry and support from DCMS, are due to develop a set of best practice case studies for sustainable tourism. This is a part of improving our understanding of the economic argument for sustainable tourism and ‘future-proofing’ the UK’s tourism offer.

The visitor economy is a diverse sector, largely made up of a number of SMEs. This post will also be representing the sector perspective on any new regulations or amendments affecting the sector.

**Job description**:
This role offers a high degree of autonomy and opportunity to shape the policy areas to align with your interests.

Key responsibilities are likely to include:

- Ownership of policy areas which could include connectivity, place and sustainability. Work with analysts to use research and data to inform decision making and policy development.
- Collaborating with other government departments to ensure the visitor economy perspective is considered in cross-government policies and regulation (e.g. DfT on transport in priority visitor economy areas, DLUHC for levelling up and local government, Defra for national parks and sustainable tourism opportunities).
- Working with the British Tourism Authority and industry stakeholders from the Tourism Industry Council, to deliver a set of best practice case studies on sustainable tourism.
- Leading on Ministerial briefings and stakeholder engagement as required.
- Co-leading DCMS representation on a region of England.

**Person specification**:
Essential Requirements:

- Experience of the policy making and implementation process, and ability to grasp complex policy areas.
- Deliver great results in fast paced environment whilst ensuring the quality of your work is completed to a high standard.
