The Role

Applications are invited for a talented, ambitious and productive Research Assistant to work on two projects based at the Population Health Sciences Institute (PHSI) at Newcastle University, both funded by the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) North East and North Cumbria.

The first is a mixed methods evaluation of the NHS Staff Tobacco Dependency Offer in North East North Cumbria funded by the North East & North Cumbria Integrated Care Board (50% FTE). You will be working closely with evaluation leads Dr Kerry Brennan-Tovey and Dr Ryc Aquino. You will be responsible for the day-to-day coordination and delivery of evaluation activities, including data collection and report write-up.

The second project will involve qualitative analysis (using thematic analysis and content analysis approaches) of data collected as part of the PoCo Study, a region-wide study exploring postnatal contraception provision in the North East and North Cumbria (50% FTE). You will work with Prof Judith Rankin and Dr Malcolm Moffat as well as a multidisciplinary steering group, and will have the opportunity to contribute to papers, to present your work at meetings and conferences, and to be involved in future and ongoing reproductive health research opportunities.

This is a full time post, fixed term until 31 December 2023

The Institute is part of the Faculty of Medical Sciences which holds a Silver Athena SWAN award.

Key Accountabilities
Collaborate with all members of the two research teams to deliver on the study protocols
Undertake analysis of quantitative and qualitative survey data and qualitative interview data
Carry out research within agreed timelines, meeting project milestones and to a high standard Attend meetings and other events relevant to the project
Prepare (or contribute to preparing) papers for publication, and disseminate findings at conferences as required
Carry out administrative tasks and other duties as required
Wider contribution to the institute and take on tasks as requested by the Dean

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Clear knowledge and experience of qualitative and quantitative research methods in public health research (including data collection and analysis)
Evidence of ability to (or potential for) co-author peer reviewed publications
Evidence of ability to work independently and with others in a team
The ability to communicate to a range of audiences using a range of presentation approaches
The ability maintain confidentiality and to handle difficult or sensitive situations
Be able to work flexibly with regard to hours of work including occasional evenings, and travel across the region
Proficient in generic IT skills
Desirable
Experience of using NVivo qualitative analysis software
An understanding of the importance of public involvement and engagement in research

Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality

**Qualifications**:
A good first degree (2:1 or higher)
Desirable
Educated to Master’s level
