**Job summary**:
**The Cytogenetics Group is one of five research focused groups in Radiation Effects Department. The Radiation Effects Department carries out research and delivers advice on the health effects of ionising and non-ionising radiations. The Cytogenetics Group provides a core biological dosimetry service for assessment of radiation exposure of humans. This service is underpinned by research to identify and develop novel biomarkers of exposure, improve statistical interpretation of data and ensure optimal emergency preparedness. The Group has further research interests in quantitative and mechanistic aspects of ionising and non-ionising radiations particularly in relation to cancer and cataracts.**

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) offers hybrid working this means that whilst the role will be based in Chilton, there will be opportunities for an element of working from home. The balance between home and workplace working is to be agreed with the line manager, determined primarily by business needs and in line with departmental policy.

**Main duties of the job**:
The Group leader of Cytogenetics Group is a key post within the Radiation, Chemical and Environmental Hazards Division of UKHSA (RCE).

The main responsibilities are:

- Management and direction of Cytogenetics Group within Radiation Effects Department.
- Provision of a biological dosimetry service, including lab tests and statistical analysis.
- Development of research activities to improve biological dosimetry and investigate specific aspects of the effects of ionising and non-ionising radiations.
- Provision of input into radiation protection advice and policy development as requested by HD/RCE Director.
- Management of cytogenetics laboratory facilities for RCE.
- Maintain readiness for emergency response, through international networking activities.

**Working Pattern: Full Time, Part Time, Flexible Working, Hybrid Working.**

**Responsibilities section**:
The post involves a high degree of autonomy and requires regular high level decision-making on a wide range of managerial topics. Emphasis is on expert scientific/technical contribution to advice and research both inside and outside UKHSA. This contribution involves evaluating complex information from a number of sources including professionals and scientists both inside UKHSA and in outside organisations, including in other countries.

**As the Cytogenetics Group Leader your main responsibilities will include**:

- Leading the work, line management, performance, discipline and development of Group staff, currently seven, ensuring adequate resourcing.
- Giving a strategic lead on the direction, emphasis and scheduling of major work items.
- Providing leadership to the scientific work of the Group encompassing
- Provision of high quality biological dosimetry service.
- Strong supporting statistical analysis capability for the Group and Department.
- Research on quantitative and mechanistic aspects of the biological effects of radiation.
- Development of research income including collaborative research project proposals, including HPRU collaborations.
- Presenting UKHSAs work particularly in biological dosimetry including scientific publications (UKHSA and peer-review) and forums, replies to parliamentary questions, news and other broadcast media.
- Leading the quality, governance, risk, project management and health/safety arrangements in the Group.
- Managing annual income and expenditure budgets and targets.
- Under emergency situations, take on a senior role and/or manage one of the emergency response teams.
