The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is home to one of the world’s leading research facilities, the ISIS neutron spallation source. ISIS uses neutrons to probe the structure of matter to the atomic level. Our scientists carry out 1000s of experiments every year on samples ranging from simple and complex compounds to new alloys, to superconducting materials, to pharmaceuticals and biological samples. The work at ISIS also includes testing engineering fabrication and new engineering materials, as well as the effects of radiation on electronics.

The ISIS Experimental Operations Division is seeking a Group Leader for the Electrical and Electronic User Support Group (EEUSG). The EEUSG provides electrical and electronic support for all our beamline instruments and is key in delivering many of the experiments carried out at ISIS. The Group also have a thriving project development section that has an integral role in producing bespoke equipment and devices needed by our scientists for their experiments. The Group also have a growing motion control section which supports many of the beamline instruments’ key components, including motor driven parts and systems to allow experiments to be controlled remotely.

**About you**

You will offer a technical background in electronics and/or electrical engineering, or equivalent work. You will have gained considerable success working in, and leading technical teams. You will be able to demonstrate strong communication skills and be open to new ideas and working methods.

**Responsibilities**:

- Provide day to day leadership, supervision, and people management to a multidisciplinary team of engineers.
- Develop and implement strategies for the Group that align with the STFC’s goals and objectives.
- Ensure that all work undertaken by the Group follows the guidance set out in the ISIS Project Management Framework.
- To communicate effectively with employees, stakeholders, and customers, both verbally and in writing, and encourage the same from all Group members.
- Collaborate with other ISIS Groups and STFC Departments and stakeholders to ensure that business needs are being met.
- Showcase the work of the Group at conferences and workshops both within the UK and internationally and encourage such activity from all members of the Group.
- Oversee the staff development and training the EEUSG, including our graduate and apprentice placement students.
- Provide leadership and guidance on all health and safety matters within the workplace.

**Person Specification**:

- Qualified to degree level, or equivalent, in Electronics / Electrical Engineering or have significant experience in electronics/electrical or related work (S)
- Demonstrate a high level of leadership and management experience of a technical team where they have shown the ability to develop and implement strategic plans (S&I)
- Demonstrate strong problem solving and decision-making skills. (S&I)
- Be able to clearly describe their contributions to electrical/electronic projects that showcase their technical background and achievements (S&I)
- Demonstrate an ability to manage resources, workloads of staff and negotiate with stakeholders. (I)
- Be able to describe their project management experience and be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of standard project management practices (I)
- Demonstrate a high strong understanding of safety in the workplace, regulatory requirements and the common practices employed to ensure the well-being of staff (I)
