Good communication is essential to any organisation. We want to make sure our customers, stakeholders and staff understand our purpose, priorities and values. But we also need to make sure that we engage our staff in our priorities and support organisational and cultural change, maximising performance and delivering business strategy in the most effective way.
The team remit is broad. Our work covers internal communications and engagement; media management; strategic communications; external affairs; marketing and campaigns; corporate communications, including branding and design; customer communications; digital activity, including social media, publishing to GOV.UK; stakeholder engagement/reputation management, including conducting regular surveys; and event management.
We are part of the wider Government Communications Service (GCS) and aim to deliver standards and best practice in line with GCS guidance. We have ambitions to establish a strong communications profession within the Inspectorate, with access to development and training opportunities through the GCS and local South West networks.
The post reports to the Head of Business Improvement, Knowledge & Stakeholder Management with direct line management for two senior information officers and overall responsibility for a team of communication practitioners with external affairs, internal communications, marketing and campaigns, digital channels and press office responsibilities. **Job description**:
We are looking for a strong and empathetic communications leader with experience of leading cross functional communication teams, including experience of managing teams comprising hybrid and remote workers.
An ability to think strategically and understand the impact of communications on organisational reputation and its customers is crucial. As is an awareness of the political landscape and current media agendas.
This is a high-profile role, so we need someone who can communicate, influence and operate clearly and effectively at all levels, including Board level.
A typical week as Communications Lead could see the post holder
- Attending Executive Team (ET) meetings to brief leaders on the current media & social media landscape, on any communication issues;
- Leading the team daily meetings, making sure team members are aware of each other’s work, priorities are set, and problems solved.
- Attending and playing an active role in Strategy Directorate leadership group meetings
- Accompanied by other Communications Team members, working through a challenge or business priority with a colleague in another part of the organisation, understanding where communications can help make an impact to their work and developing communication actions to deliver with them or on their behalf.
- Reviewing and providing oversight and sign-off of internal and external news items, campaign briefs and communication plans.
- Reviewing and editing stories and content for internal and external publication
- Checking in with the latest GCS developments and training and sharing with the team.
- Holding 1:1 meetings with team members to check progress against goals and development objectives
