**Job summary**:
This is an exciting and demanding opportunity for an exceptional individual to join the DIT Africa network as the Head of Communications & Marketing. Based in London, the job holder will work closely with the Africa HMTC and his Senior Leadership Team to design, direct and deliver the region’s communications and marketing strategy for our trade and investment work. Coordination across the range of UK government departments across Africa that work on prosperity issues (business and economics, science and innovation, climate change, and more) will be critical to success.

The job holder will be the primary docking point for DIT and Whitehall Marketing and Communications colleagues as well as for Heads of Communications at British Embassies and High Commissions across Africa, and their respective teams.

**Job description**:

- Provide strategic leadership and direction of the DBT Africa Communications & Marketing Team and develop a stronger culture across the DBT Africa network for utilising marketing and communications, to maximise the impact and visibility of our trade and investment work with target audiences.
- Manage reputation and build profile of HMTC across the African continent and the UK by working with colleagues at post and in London to set-up and deliver press and media opportunities, and generate content and coverage on digital and social media.
- Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of an annual Communications & Marketing Plan for the DBT Africa region in support of the priorities set out in the Regional Trade Plan, in collaboration with all relevant colleagues across Africa and the UK.
- Serve as strategic adviser to HMTC for Africa on marketing and communications priorities for the region and advise HMTC and DBT Africa Senior Leadership Team on strategies to reach target influencers across Africa and the UK media markets, including providing guidance on deploying HMTC as a spokesperson for the trade and investment and wider prosperity agenda across Africa.
- Ensure delivery of a unified marketing and communications policy across the Africa network; including on content generation for digital communications and social media, ensuring that HMTC for Africa engages audience segments and leads to measurable outcomes.
- Work with Strategic Events team to deliver impactful communications and marketing support for major events and tradeshows
- Oversee creation and deployment of trade and investment-focused elements of the GREAT campaign, including bidding for funding, cooperation with internal and external service providers and stakeholders, logistics and comms/media coverage, budget management.
- Manage the Communications & Marketing Team to achieve strong performance individually and collectively, to ensure everyone flourishes and delivers.

**Hybrid working**

Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DBT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

**Person specification**:
**Essential Criteria**
- Experience in developing and managing media relationships.
- Experience of working in a communications role.
- Experience of working in a marketing role.
- Ability to see and set strategic priorities; and a strong track record of delivering at pace and in complex scenarios.
- Leadership and management experience in a relevant role, with a track record of fostering collaboration and partnerships.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to deliver through teams and work productively and collaboratively with wider networks of colleagues.

**Desirable Criteria**
- Good understanding of trade policy, trade and investment promotion, and/or economic issues preferred.

- Works well under pressure.
- Experience of working across HMG in London / Whitehall.
- Demonstrated understanding of HMG Marketing and Communications priorities, processes and procedures.
