The Role

Respiratory viruses pose substantial threats to human health and economic prosperity, exemplified by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. This has highlighted the critical role played by innate interferons in limiting the severity of respiratory viral disease. Type I (IFN-I) and type III interferons (IFN-III) are produced by virally infected cells, signalling their uninfected neighbours to adopt an 'antiviral state' that inhibits viral spread. However, it is difficult to distinguish the action of IFN-I from IFN-III in the airway epithelium, since they share overlapping signalling pathways. Consequently, little is known about their individual functions, especially in humans.

You will lead an exciting project investigating innate IFN immunity to respiratory viruses using cutting-edge in vitro and in vivo models. Techniques employed include CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing of human induced pluripotent stem cells, differentiated to immune and airway epithelial cells and challenged with viral pathogens including SARS-CoV-2 in a bespoke containment level 3 facility. With a multidisciplinary team of expert collaborators you will profile responses to infection using single cell RNA sequencing and proteomics, combining these studies with in vivo analysis of respiratory viral infection in a conditional mouse model of Stat2-deficiency. Together, these approaches will deliver critical insight into the cellular and molecular architecture of the IFN system in the airway, informing the potential therapeutic role for recombinant IFNs in treatment of respiratory viral disease.

As part of our commitment to career development for research colleagues, the University has developed 3 levels of research role profiles. Key Accountabilities
- Although working under the general guidance of an academic or Principal Investigator, the postholder will contribute ideas, including enhancements to the technical or methodological aspects of their studies, thus providing substantial 'added value'
- Develop and carry out the specified project using appropriate techniques and equipment as outlined in the personal requirements
- Determine appropriate methodologies for research, with advice and support where required
- Begin to write, with appropriate support, proposals for individual research funding or, where funders do not permit this, contribute to the writing of collective bids
- Assess research findings for the need/scope for further investigations
- Contribute to the writing up of their research for publication and dissemination, either through seminar and conference presentations or through publications
- Present research findings, either at conferences or through publications in reputable outlets appropriate to the discipline
- May be involved in the supervision, with guidance, of final year undergraduate research projects and in providing support to postgraduate research students or Research Assistants
- Will need to work with the support staff and, on occasions, with undergraduate and postgraduate students, and interact intellectually with other academic members of the Institute.
- May contribute to events celebrating the public engagement of science/social sciences/humanities
- Develop an awareness of University structures, policies and procedures and relevant issues in the higher education, research, social and political environment
- Undertake training in advanced research skills necessary for delivery of the role
- Contribute to promotion of a safety culture within the laboratory, including the development of SOPs and BIOCOSHH forms
