We’re currently recruiting for a new Head of Fleet and Buildings.

The Head of Fleet and Buildings is part of the Net Zero Directorate and is key to the transition of FLS to net zero by 2045. The position is responsible for the efficient and effective provision of fleet and buildings for FLS.

Whether this is improving our data and systems to provide high quality information to drive sound decision making and facilitate long term planning, increasing the efficient and effective use of our current fleet and building stock, adopting smarter working principles, or leveraging better value and promoting opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint no 2 days will be the same.

We have over 600 buildings including visitor centres, deer larders, mechanical engineering workshops, residential properties and bothies. We also have over 500 vehicles including cars, vans, 4x4s, quad bikes and harvesting machines.

We need someone who is motivated to drive continuous improvement, experienced in strategic asset management and infrastructure investment with the leadership skills to enable and lead on change and transformation.

*About the team*

Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) is a Scottish Government executive agency established in 2019.

We are also a public corporation, generating income, expanding our commercial opportunities and delivery of services to support the people of Scotland. We are responsible for managing Scotland’s national forests and land. This includes both direct delivery and facilitation of activities on it, including woodland creation and trading of timber, building roads and civil engineering, wildlife and deer management, expanding renewable energy, biodiversity and conservation.

This role is part of the Net Zero Directorate and is a key to the transition of FLS to net zero by 2045.

The position is responsible for the efficient and effective provision of fleet and buildings for FLS.

The Fleet Team is spread across 10 workshop locations with additional administrative support provided from a number of offices. The team is made up of mechanical engineers and professional fleet managers to support the provision of vehicles, forestry machinery and equipment to FLS colleagues.

The Buildings Team comprises of a range of building professionals who manage our built estate of over 600 buildings throughout Scotland. The team work in close collaboration with regional colleagues in the strategic planning and operational management of buildings across the national forests and land ensuring they are safe and compliant. Both elements of Fleet & Buildings ensure that services within FLS are capable of supporting the delivery of our Corporate Plan and beyond.

*What you will do*

The Head of Fleet & Buildings plays a key role within the Net Zero Directorate, overseeing the delivery of services for FLS fleet and buildings, development of policy and strategy and key improvement programmes, such as the electrification of our fleet and rationalisation of the built estate. You will also contribute to wider corporate developments around strategic asset management and infrastructure planning and assisting with the delivery of wider projects.

You will play a key role in business planning, contributing to the development of a strategic approach which allows us to develop and implement a sustainable and resilient future model for our business.

Reporting to the Director of Net Zero, you will lead a dispersed team of approximately 50 people in the Fleet & Buildings Team. You will be a key part of the Net Zero Leadership Team and promote a one team culture with the Regions.

The purpose of the role is to lead and manage the buildings, capital works and mechanical engineering teams and the services they provide. To develop a first rate customer service ethos.

Reviewing systems to ensure they provide high quality management information to inform tactical business and strategic investment decisions, and support the business to make savings, efficiencies and improvements. Development and maintenance of KPIs for the built estate and vehicles that demonstrate efficient, effective and economic provision of the service.

*Main Duties*

*Leading the teams*
- Provide strategic leadership for the teams by translating national goals and regional targets into delivery priorities.
- Drive forward professionalism in the delivery team both in terms of overall teamperformance as well as individual professional development and deliver continuous improvement.
- Lead safety first culture within the team, providing support and understanding whilst driving forward a continuous improvement plan.
- Line Manager for Head of MES and the Buildings and Capital Works Manager, providing guidance and support.
- Lead workforce planning across the functions to ensure that we have a capable and resilient team, building for our future.

*Programme Delivery*
- Develop and sponsor programmes of work which deliver on FLS strategic priorities,ensuring these are approved, communicated and fully resourced.
- Provide leadership to the team to support the delivery of programmes.
- Prepare an effective and efficient Business plan, resourced appropriately to allow the team to achieve the targets and monitor expenditure and service provision throughout the year.

*Service Improvement*
- Maintain and promote effective networks with stakeholders and customers to ensure that the team deliver consistent and high quality output.
- Ensure the development and delivery against key performance indicators for the service.
- Develop and embed a customer service ethos approach to working with the rest of the business.
- Keep up to date with legislative and technical developments.
- Network with other public bodies, develop relationships and explore opportunities to achieve common goals.
- Review and propose revisions to travel policies and rates, and ensure all guidance and policies are kept up to date.
- Review and improve management data for Fleet & Buildings to drive best value decision making.

*NZ Leadership*
- Play an active role in promoting carbon reduction and reducing our environmental Impact.
- Engage with and provide leadership to the wider NZ teams.
- Engage with directorates and regions working collaboratively to deliver both operational and strategic outcomes.
- Support the Director of Net Zero acting as their deputy when required.
