**Job description**:
A Software Developer designs, runs and improves software that meets user needs. They are part of a team working closely with colleagues and business stakeholders to deliver new and amended software. The primary customer being the General Register Office (GRO).

They are responsible for writing clean, secure code following a test-driven approach. They create code that is open by default and easy for others to reuse.

Your main day to day responsibilities will be (but not limited to):

- As a Software Developer you will design, create and test new and amended software to ensure it meets user needs.
- You will be responsible for writing clean, secure and well-tested code.
- You will act in line with best practice guidelines and help other colleagues to improve these guidelines.
- During software production, you will identify and document issues and bugs, implementing resolutions and retesting to ensure it meets agreed standards.
- You will collaborate in reviews of specifications, with others as appropriate.
- Act as a coach and mentor for more junior colleagues through effective management, direction and motivation.
- You can expect to work on core platforms, business as usual (BAU) fixes.

Note: An employee may be required to carry out other duties within the scope of the grade and within the limits of their skill, competence and training.- You will also be expected to carry out the following day to day activities:
- Demonstrates strong software development ability; a passion for designing systems and services and a desire for software excellence and innovative solution design.
- Has at least one year’s experience in software development.
- Is able to build strong partnerships with peers across the technology organisation.
- Understands security needs and can build this into working software.
- Has good communication skills, verbal and written, and a good understanding of the use of different channels and formats for different audiences.
- Is able to manage stakeholders’ expectations and be flexible, adapting to stakeholders’ reactions to reach consensus.
- Provides direction and coaching to more junior team members.

**Person specification**:
Hybrid working enables employees to work partly in their workplace(s) and partly at home in line with the Home Office Hybrid Working policy. **Essential Criteria**
- The ability to code, test and correct complex programs and scripts in line with the agreed standards and tools.
- Experience in identifying concepts and translating them into implementable designs within constraints of cost, security and sustainability.
- Working experience of testing (cases, scripts, reports, plans) to measure and improve the quality of the software being tested.
- You will have developed a broad understanding of technical concepts, tools and methods and the way in which these are implemented.
- Able to present information clearly, concisely and accurately in appropriate language, which meets the needs of the user.
