**Job summary**:
GCHQ, is an intelligence, cyber security agency with a mission to keep the UK safe. We use cutting-edge technology, ingenuity and partnerships to identify, analyse and disrupt threats. Working with our intelligence partners MI5 and MI6, we protect the UK from terrorism, cyber attacks and espionage. At GCHQ you’ll do varied and fascinating work in a supportive and inclusive environment that puts the emphasis on teamwork.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), part of GCHQ, is the UK Government’s lead authority on cyber security. The organisation is at the heart of the Government’s cyber security strategy and has the aim of making the UK the safest place to live and work online.

The National Cyber Security Centre is looking for an experienced, talented individual to join NCSC as a press officer. As part of a collaborative team, you’ll be on the communications front line, enhancing and defending the reputation of the NCSC.

**Job description**:
As a custodian of NCSC communications you’ll be in a unique position conveying to the press and public information about how the NCSC is making the UK the safest place to live and work online, while being part the UK’s largest intelligence agency, GCHQ.

The role is challenging and wide-ranging. We’ll ask you to get involved in setting communications strategies around some of our biggest challenges, such as protecting the UK’s critical national infrastructure or countering the cyber threats posed by other states. We’ll need you to craft punchy press products, and be able to brief journalists on breaking news stories, including high-profile cyber incidents. And we’ll want you to show us your creativity in developing new ways to reach our audiences.

Some travel to our other UK sites (Cheltenham and Manchester) as well as occasional international travel will be required. And you’ll also be part of our out of hours press duty rota (with appropriate senior cover), for which you’ll receive additional allowances.

**Person specification**:
We’re looking for someone who has experience of working in Government communications, public relations or journalism. You’ll have excellent knowledge of, and interest in, the UK and global news agenda and landscape, combined with strong judgement and the ability to spot stories and emerging issues. You’ll have good political awareness, and the confidence to give sound advice to seniors.

You’ll be organised, and able to juggle priorities while managing a variety of different projects to tight deadlines. Your writing will be compelling: you’ll be able to translate complicated, technical detail into engaging copy. You’ll have superb attention to detail and be cool and calm under pressure. You’ll work effectively with others, including by sharing knowledge between team members and other stakeholders.

This role will be assessed against GCS and GCHQ competencies.

**GCHQ Competencies**

The NCSC will assess you against competencies used by the UK Intelligence Community and the Government Communication Service. These competencies are based closely on the Civil Service Behaviours. The Level 3 competencies you’ll assessed against are:

- Seeing the Big Picture (Civil Service Behaviour Equivalent: Seeing the Big Picture)
- Communicating and Influencing (Civil Service Behaviour Equivalent: Communicating and Influencing)
- Working Collaboratively (Civil Service Behaviour Equivalent: Working Together)
- Making Effective Decisions (Civil Service Behaviour Equivalent: Making Effective Decisions)
