To provide up to date services to our customers, systems need to be developed, improved and maintained. This position plays a pivotal role in ensuringthat our database platforms are maintained, continuously improved, and kept in a high performing state.
**Your new role**
The Head of DBA is responsible for all aspects of maintaining the SQL database platform estate and for setting the technical strategic direction for the database estate and acting as a profession lead for the DBA community. This role can be divided into twodistinct responsibilities:
- Creating relevant database strategies and working closely with the data and architectural community to build technology roadmaps, whilst overseeing & delivering the creation and implementation of architectures and designs relating to database technologiesbased on these roadmap and strategies.
- Providing the leadership, guidance and direction to the DBA community of practise (CoP). Helping the individual DBA Engineers to develop within the sphere of their own responsible remit and delivery high quality networking outcomes and building a strongand effective CoP.
The Head of DBA will lead a small specialist team to build, manage, support and maintain solutions according to departmental policy. This will include devising future strategies and adopting automation and Cloud technologies, as well as looking at best practiceand continual improvement. There will also be a requirement to develop and promote reliable engineering methods supporting the development of robust and resilient solutions.
The Head of DBA will manage third party provision of DBA related services and the provision of expertise to develop architectural solutions for DBA services throughout the service product life cycle. In this role, you will:
- Oversee programmes and projects
- Work with technical architects to translate the architectural designs into operations and support technical architects in operationalising the designs
As Head of DBA you will inspire the teams to keep an open mind and explore innovative ways to solve problems, facilitating the team's work and removing blockers when they occur.
The Head of DBA will ensure that work flows into the team effectively and is managed through to completion, in priority order, maintaining database availability, guiding the development of the team and ensuring all work produced by the team is of the higheststandard.
The Head of DBA will work across IT through wider planning initiatives such as the annual corporate planning process and is accountable for projects that are run within the DBA team, obtaining budgetary approval, managing procurement, delivery and outcomes.
The role necessitates a drive to stay abreast of latest developments, techniques and technologies, acting as an SME to identify and promote technical advances that would bring improved value to the business, inline with our IT and Data Strategic direction consideringtheir move to Cloud Technologies.
The Head of DBA is a 'hands-on' role, and you will be required to work with and support your team to investigate, diagnose, and fix any issues that arise, staying up to date with the tools and skills required to monitor, manage, and maintain a medium sizedMicrosoft SQL Server estate
**What you'll need to succeed**
- Proven experience of managing a team of highly technical DBA delivering and supporting critical database solutions
- A logical, structured and detailed approach to technical problem solving using a holistic approach, in conjunction with an excellent eye for detail
- The ability to support current and new team members in the technical aspect of their role through mentoring and knowledge transfer
- A high level of experience of SQL Server Database Administration, and in in reading and writing T-SQL and dynamic SQL scripts
- Experience in the install and advanced configuration of SQL Server Instances
- Strong database performance tuning and capacity management skills
- A good working knowledge of the Microsoft BI stack and BI principles
- A good level of knowledge and experience in SQL based automation and scripting
- The understanding and promotion of ITIL processes and best practices
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, both verbal and written, to convey crucial information in a clear and engaging way
- An ability to manage projects to achieve cost, time and quality targets
