Blackpool, United Kingdom Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Diabetes & Endocrinology team based at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic individual who is able to follow instruction, work on their own initiative, and as part of a team. Attention to detail is of paramount importance with high level accuracy rates. The maintenance of patient confidentiality and excellent customer care skills are essential to this post.

Previous secretarial experience is essential with a good understanding of the 18 week pathways. A good understanding and knowledge of the Trust’s hospital systems (HISS, MAXIMS & NEXUS) is desirable, although training will be provided.

The successful applicant should be computer literate with a good understanding of Word, Excel and Outlook as well as the ability to work to tight deadlines, transcribing letters, prioritising results, supporting the consultants and covering annual and sick leave. It is also imperative to be adaptable to change particularly at short notice. This is an extremely busy role and comes with a high level of responsibility.

1. Transcription, typing and production of dictated reports and correspondence, using G2 voice recognition software, for the Consultants and team. These may include outpatient reports, discharge summaries, operation notes and other relevant clinical and non-clinical correspondence.
2. Manage patients’ investigation results. Check all incoming laboratory/radiology results, ensuring that abnormal results are communicated promptly to the appropriate clinician. Ensure all reports are seen and signed by the clinician prior to filing in case notes. Retrieve investigation results and reports from the Pathology, Radiology (PACS) and ADAMS systems, where applicable. Be responsible for chasing up any missing results.
3. Taking and transcribing minutes of Directorate and Operational Support meetings when required.
4. Administrative support for the Directorate.
5. Provide Cross Cover for other Directorate colleagues.
6. Communicate appropriately with patients, relatives and healthcare workers who may be aggressive or irate.
7. Respond to enquiries from patients and healthcare personnel as appropriate. Provide empathy and reassurance to patients where necessary. If appropriate, with permission of and instructed by the Consultant, convey clinical/medical information to patients, medical, nursing, pharmacy or other healthcare staff.
