Overview
Great St Mary’s is open every day for visits and community activities. It is at the centre of Cambridge and is a major historic tourist destination with over 300,000 visitors a year. The Front of Church Assistants works as part of a small team of staff and volunteers to provide a welcome to visitors, operate the gift shop, tower, and support the practical management of the church. The post involves some weekend and evening work.
The following key responsibilities and requirements for this role are set out below. You may be required to perform further duties that are related to your core role, other than those specified below.
**Responsibilities**:
- Welcoming visitors
- Operating the shop till including cashing up
- Counting and banking cash
- Assisting with purchase of stock and creation of displays
- Day to day responsibility for setting up for and operating tower visits, tours and other events
- Daily cleaning and responsibility for the presentation of the building
- Setting up and moving furniture for services and events
- Acting as steward for concerts and other events
- General ‘householder’ maintenance
- Locking and unlocking, and general security
- Other tasks as specified in the detailed daily task list or as directed by the Church Operations Manager

Education & qualifications
- GCSE English and Maths or equivalent
- A high standard of written English
- A clear and confident communicator
Knowledge & experience
The post holder will be required to develop knowledge of and if necessary, undertake training in:
- Retail processes and procedures including the operation of EPOS till systems.
- Operation of building management systems such as fire alarm
- Basic first aid skills.
- Responding appropriately to a wide range of visitors
- Safeguarding
Skills & attributes
- A confident, presentable person to help manage the church, operate our shop and work with a small team of staff and volunteer welcomers to manage visits and tours and events.
- A high standard of appearance, good communication skills and an accurate attention to detail are essential.
- Staff may be on their feet for extended periods and need to undertake some physical work (including climbing the tower). The job may also require being responsible for the building and some lifting and it is therefore important that the post holder is confident, physically fit and able to perform these tasks.
