Children’s Emergency Department Liaison

The coordinator will provide specialist advice and support to the organisational workforce and will work collaboratively with the Safeguarding Team. The role encompasses the sharing of health information about children and young people following their attendance to the Emergency Department with multi agency professionals both internally and externally.
This role is full time equivalent and working hours are Monday to Friday 9-5.
- The post holder will be required to work in a busy and demanding environment and should be able to work without direct supervision, exercise initiative and seek support /guidance from the Specialist Lead Nurse for Safeguarding Children/Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children and Children Looked After.
- Provide comprehensive screening of children’s attendances to the Emergency Department and extract relevant information of concern to share with appropriate agencies following the child’s attendance.
- Liaise and share information with Children’s Social Care, 0-19’s team, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Teams and other specialist teams regarding any health promotion and child development needs which are a cause for concern or require further support from agencies (including Safeguarding).
- Ensure that compliance with the national Child Protection Information Sharing System (CP-IS) is accessed for every child attendance to the Emergency Department.
- Efficient collection, input and recording of data in line with service requirements to assist the Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children and Children Looked After in preparation for quarterly assurance reports.

The Safeguarding Team includes Named professionals and practitioners working within Adults, Children and Unborn supporting all patents and staff with safeguarding.
- Work within all national and local protocols, policies and procedures in relation to safeguarding children.
- Ensure all statutory safeguarding concerns are shared with relevant agencies and escalated to the Specialist Lead Nurse for Safeguarding Children/Named Nurse for Children and Children Looked After.
- Liaise with colleagues across departments and external agencies to ensure that information is shared appropriately in a timely manner and in accordance with GDPR legislation and information sharing agreements in place.
- Provide education to front line staff when gaps in practice identified.
- To be responsible for ensuring confidentiality and safekeeping of patient records and compliance of mandatory data protection training.
- Act as a point of contact and support for Emergency Department staff in relation to any cases of concern that attend the department.
- Clearly communicate and document enquiries/information obtained from other professionals and relay to the appropriate safeguarding professional to enable an effective and speedy response.
- Sharing of information linking children and families into the longer-term community-based support which addresses their ongoing range of identified needs.
- Escalation of non-compliance of Trust policies, procedures and guidelines and report to senior management team if practice appears to contravene policies or if concerned about any aspect of patient care.
- Report an oversight of the Liaison service daily to the Specialist Lead Nurse for Safeguarding Children/Named Nurse for Children and Children Looked After.
- Ability to identify the signs and symptoms of suspected abuse, child exploitation, radicalisation and developmental stages of children from birth to 18yrs. Be able to refer and raise concerns with the appropriate agencies and professionals requesting early help or statutory services at the earliest opportunity.
- Take responsibility for own learning and development by recognising and taking advantage of all opportunities to learn internally and externally.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Be able to plan and organise time daily and in line with demands of the service and manage priorities within their caseload.
- To maintain accurate and comprehensive records using appropriate Trust IT systems and safe storage.
- Commitment to anti-discriminatory practice.
- Exercise emotional intelligence and demonstrate a developing emotional resilience in relation to their role.
