**Job summary**:
The Defence People-Accommodation team is looking for a policy professional to join the team responsible for setting, overseeing and improving accommodation policy.

We set the accommodation entitlements for over 150,000 Service personnel and their families and are always looking at how we can improve policy to support our people better and respond to changes in the world around us. Whether it is drawing together evidence to devise new standards for accommodation focused on what really matters to our people or, responding to requests to support Government efforts to accommodate Afghan refugees, there is always something to test your policy skills.

**Job description**:
We are seeking an HEO to join our Accommodation Policy Improvements Team who are focused on developing accommodation policy that is fit for a modern defence.

Working alongside desk officers from the armed forces and civil service, the issues you will be working on will change and evolve from one month to the next. Your primary role will be to consider the situation, consult with stakeholders, develop evidence-based options, and draft recommendations on the best way forward. The issue you are considering might be driven by Ministerial priorities, challenges and suggestions coming from service personnel or parliamentary committees and changes in legislation, or even your own ideas about how we can make accommodation policy work better.

Your stakeholders will include others in the MOD (the single Service Head Quarters, Defence Infrastructure, Finance etc.), wider Government, service charities and organisations (e.g. Families Federations, SSAFA, FiMT) as well as service personnel and families. It will be important to consider all these perspectives when making policy recommendations. Alongside this, you will work with the Accommodation analysis team to use data and evidence to support decision-making, and to evaluate the impact of policies as they are trialled or launched.

**Person specification**:
This role requires someone with proven policy skills and a good understanding of Public Sector Equality Duty. A background in accommodation services (delivery or policy) is desirable, but not essential, as on the job training will be provided along with opportunities for continuous professional development.

**Responsibilities**
- Generate and consider evidence to develop policy options, taking into account stakeholder perspectives, the priorities of the team, MOD and wider government.
- Undertake Equality Impact Assessments on policy options and provide support to other policy advisors within the team on Public Sector Equality Duty matters.
- Provide secretariat support to the Accommodation Policy Working Group.
- Support the Accommodation Policy Operations Team deliver amendments and updates to the Tri Service Accommodation Regulations.
- Regularly review policies you are responsible for, looking for potential implications of changes elsewhere in accommodation, MOD policy or wider legislation and identify opportunities to improve policy.
- Work with the single Service Housing Colonels and other stakeholders to provide timely and accurate responses to accommodation policy queries from service personnel and their families.
- Provide input to draft responses to Ministerial Correspondence, Parliamentary Questions, Treat Official Ministerial correspondence and Freedom of Information enquiries within required timescales.
