The UK Space Agency is an executive agency of the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology (DSIT) and provides technical advice on the government’s space strategy, supporting the UK space sector to deliver the government’s vision.

**The role**

***The Earth Observation Technology Advisor will sit within the Earth Observation (EO) & Climate team in the EO & LEO (Low Earth Orbit) Directorate.

Earth observation plays a crucial role in delivering a wide range of government priorities. EO is recognised in the Integrated Review as a critical space capability for military and civil use, is central to disaster management, and forms the basis for space-based climate and environmental monitoring. The National Space Strategy pledges that we ‘will strive to remain at the forefront of Earth observation technology and know-how’.

Earth Observation is one of the fastest growing parts of the UK space sector, and innovation in the EO sector will help support the development of a thriving UK economy. COP26 has underlined the crucial role that space-based Earth observation plays in the monitoring and mitigation of climate change. Images of our planet from orbit are acquired continuously and together with powerful scientific tools enable a better understanding and improved management of the Earth and its environment.

The UK Space Agency’s EO Technology Programme was recently allocated an additional £15 million to scale up over the coming 2 years a part of the DSIT-led EO Investment Package, representing a step change in funding for the national EO programme.

The UK Space Agency primarily supports the development of EO technologies by funding the Centre for Earth Observation Instrumentation (CEOI), an industrial/academic consortium of EO experts.

We are looking for someone to become the main working-level point of contact for CEOI to oversee programme delivery, working flexibly in partnership with the EO Technology Programme Lead. You will also lead day to day interaction with the newly appointed CEOI Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) team, and you will represent the UK Space Agency through engaging with industrial and academic stakeholders interested in the CEOI programme.

Prior knowledge is not required. Once you have developed an understanding of the CEOI portfolio and EO sector priorities, you will provide advice and insights to colleagues in the UK Space Agency and wider Government, helping to shape implementation plans, wider space strategy, and to make the case for further investments and the procurement of new public services.
