**Research Associate**: £32,348 to £42,155 per annum

The Role
Newcastle University Solve (NU Solve) in the School of Mathematics, Statistics & Physics (MSP) is seeking to recruit an Impact Assistant / Associate to join a dedicated interdisciplinary team providing mechanisms for establishing and managing projects across all of the School’s main fields of research.
This is an exciting role for a statistical data scientist to work on a diverse range of business projects with key industry, business, and government partners. You will expand the capacity of NU Solve to develop closer partnerships with businesses, cultural industries, and external agencies, and to broaden the scope of activity for the School of MSP in the area of data science and statistics.
This is a fixed term position, available immediately and tenable for 24 months initially, with the view to extend. We would be happy to discuss arrangements for flexible and/or blended working

Key Accountabilities
The role is at Research Assistant / Associate level, based within NU Solve in the School of Mathematics, Statistics & Physics
The successful applicant will work on consultancy, training, applied research and student projects, working with and under direct academic and NU Solve manager supervision
The Person
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Broad knowledge of data science and statistics
**Knowledge of a range of statistical methods, for example**: regression, classification, clustering, design of experiments, Bayesian statistics, time series analysis, dimension reduction
Skills in technical software such as R/Python, Shiny, LaTeX
Familiarity with online communication technology, for example Zoom, Teams
Appropriate experience in writing research publications
Ability to handle a diverse portfolio of work, across a range of project types (desirable for Assistant)
Ability to analyse large and complex datasets (desirable for Assistant)
Desirable
Broad knowledge of mathematics and physics
Additional software skills such as Tidyverse, Tableau, C/C++, Java
Experience of working within and/or for organisations outside of academia
Expertise with Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
Experience of delivering oral presentations (essential for Research Associate)
Experience in report writing for projects underpinned by statistics and/or data science (essential for Associate)

**Qualifications**:
PhD (awarded or nearing completion) in statistics, statistical data science or a closely related discipline
Masters and/or BSc awarded in the field of statistics, data science or a closely related discipline
