Senior Clinical Fellow in Diabetes

Chorley, United Kingdom Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Full time

In this post you will be working within a supportive and educationally-focussed environment, the post-holder will provide registrar-level experience in diabetes and endocrinology in a teaching hospital with all the main medical and surgical sub-specialities.

This role would particularly suit doctors who have completed CMT and also individuals with equivalent experience who are looking to progress to speciality training and also for those looking to go down the non-consultant career grade or SAS route.

This post is for 12 months and will provide very good basic training in diabetes and endocrinology and would be excellent preparation for a specialist training post.

The post holder will share the in-patient duties with other diabetes and endocrinology specialist registrars (including an element of prospective cover). The post-holder would be expected to participate in On calls, ward-rounds and multi-disciplinary team meetings. They will work under the supervision of the diabetes and endocrinology consultants who lead the 2 ward teams on a monthly rotational basis.

There will be opportunities to see and manage in-patient referrals in addition to attending a range of specialist out-patient clinics.

The post will have a GIM on call element acting at registrar level if the applicant has attained the appropriate experience and competence. The current registrar GIM on call comprises a 1:10 rota. Duties will comprise those expected of an on call medical registrar (managing acutely unwell patients admitted under the department of medicine, seeing urgent referrals for medical problems in patients on surgical wards and providing advice and support for a number of more junior trainees). There are separate Renal, Oncology and Neurology registrars available out of hours as well as Cardiology Pacing and GI Bleed rotas.

At Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, you will work as part of a collaborative, friendly and caring team where you will be valued for who you are. We will support you to achieve your personal goals and to build the career you want.

We are a relatively large diabetes and endocrinology department providing a range of specialist services including the regional pituitary service. On the Preston site we have 5 consultants, and at the Chorley hospital site there are 3 consultants. We are supported by a team of diabetes specialist nurses, an endocrine specialist nurse, and a range of junior medical staff including 2 specialist registrars at the Preston site and a further one at Chorley

We have numerous out-patient activities providing a range of speciality services.

We provide support for diabetes, endocrine and general internal medicine in-patients from our newly refurbished 32 bed ward at Preston. At Chorley there are 12 beds in Rookwood A ward and 24 beds in Cuerden Ward.

We are an active teaching unit and play a regular role in the specialist registrar, CMT and foundation teaching programs. In addition we provide formal teaching for 3rd, 4thand 5thyear medical students.

All our team are encouraged to develop their roles and skills within and outside the department to create an enjoyable, progressive and sustainable career.
