**About the Opportunity**
We are currently recruiting for a Principal Modelling Consultant to join our Radioactive Waste Management and Disposal business. The role can be based at Harwell, London, Birchwood or other locations will be considered. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary business (including chemists, physicists, geologists, engineers, safety case specialists, mathematicians and project managers) who provide consultancy, modelling, safety case and laboratory studies to underpin the science, technology and engineering to allow the safe disposal of radioactive waste.
You will provide technical leadership across a portfolio of projects within the area of Radioactive Waste Management, centred on modelling for geological disposal. You will lead and support both large and small consultancy projects and proposals, many of which are multi-disciplinary. You will have the opportunity to lead and support client relationships and projects, prepare proposals, liaise with clients, manage projects and subcontractors, provide advice and deliver technical reports in line with client and regulatory requirements.
Key responsibilities:
As a Principal Modelling Consultant, you will provide technical leadership on a range of consultancy projects for customers, including radioactive waste management organisations, radioactive waste producers and regulators, both in the UK and overseas. The responsibilities include:
- Leading radioactive waste management and disposal packages of work, including overseeing and supporting our delivery teams;
- Leading modelling studies in a range of technical areas; this is likely to include both simple and complex modelling to underpin the safety of a future geological disposal facility. Key modelling areas include:
o groundwater flow and solute transport both near surface and deep underground
o radionuclide release from waste packages and repositories into the atmosphere on performance assessments for underground repositories for radioactive waste
o gas transfer and migration
o coupled modelling
o thermal modelling of radioactive waste under storage, transport or disposal conditions.
- Producing, and checking calculations, analyses, design basis documentation and technical reports
- Delivering high-quality and bespoke technical and strategic support to our clients
- Developing an understanding of the underlying requirements of our customers, and how we can meet those requirements
- Supporting development of our modelling capability with respect to radioactive waste management and disposal including mentoring and developing our graduates and other junior staff
- Supporting other team members with business development activities
- Supporting the continued development of our business, through identifying, bidding for and winning new work, either with new or existing clients
- Continuing to build and develop excellent client relationships
**Here’s What You’ll Need**:
- Degree qualification (or equivalent training and experience) in appropriate mathematical, scientific or engineering discipline
- Geological and hydrogeological characterisation
- Groundwater flow
- Gas transfer/migration
- Contaminant transport in geological media
- Coupled process modelling (THMC) in geological and engineering materials
- Ability to analyse complex systems and models, distil the important safety insights and communicate concisely with specialists and senior stakeholders
- Demonstrable ability to write clearly and present complex arguments in a well-structured manner
- Understanding of the nuclear industry, with experience of one of the following:
o UK regulatory and policy landscape for the management of radioactive waste, including recent developments in policy and strategy
o International waste management and disposal practices
