Hold GCSE Maths and English, or equivalent

Experience of disciplines including carpentry, plumbing, electrics, etc.

Awareness and understanding of Health and Safety regulations

Basic computer functionality

Knowledge of Safeguarding children and young people and Child Protection

Experience of working with confidential information

Excellent record of punctuality and attendance

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Able to remain calm under pressure, to prioritise work, to work effectively as part of a team and to accept change

**Responsibilities**

Under the guidance and instruction of the Deputy School Business Manager and/or Lead Caretaker, a Caretaker will undertake repair, maintenance and caretaking activities of the school site to ensure the smooth running of the school and the safety, security and sound condition of buildings, facilities and grounds.

The keeping of buildings and furnishings in good repair and decorative order
- To daily, on arrival, check that heating, water, electricity and gas controls and timers are working correctly, in all school areas, and take action to rectify any malfunction.
- To daily, on arrival, inspect the condition of the site, take appropriate action to rectify any deficiency which poses a health and safety risk or restricts or has the potential to restrict the smooth running of the school and to check for break-ins or other defect of the site.
- To make regular tours of the site, noting and reporting on matters affecting the health and safety of persons on the site and the general smooth running of the facilities and as required by Health and Safety Regulations.
- To monitor, resolve and complete jobs raised on the school site desk computer systems
- To undertake repairs and maintenance on furnishings, pluming works, carpentry, buildings and fixtures and fittings to ensure a safe and functioning environment is maintained.

Site security and safety
- To open and close the premises at designated times, including evenings and weekends, and to be responsible for general security. To carry out a daily check of the security of the buildings (latch windows, close doors, etc) and set alarms before locking up.
- To open and close the bicycle shed at the beginning and end of the school day.
- To open and close the gate to the Junior playground at the beginning and end of the school day.
- To make regular tours of the site, noting and reporting on matters affecting the health and safety of persons on the site and the general smooth running of the facilities.
- Under direction of the DSBM/Lead Caretaker, to undertake statutory checks, health and safety monitoring activities and risk assessments as directed (to encompass Legionella compliance testing).
- To help co-ordinate and supervise on-site contractors to ensure the smooth operation of all maintenance work on site
- To help, in conjunction with the line manager, ensure the school site and maintenance / cleaning activities are compliant with all relevant Health and Safety legislation and regulation
- To be a designated key holder with the alarm monitoring company and to attend out of hours call outs.

The cleaning of the school and safety of the site
- To keep the grounds litter free, including the immediate surrounds in Old Dover Road.
- To empty outside litter bins after lunch break each day.
- To lock the “wheelie bins” in their security pens each night.
- To clean and ensure the tidiness of paths, drives and other hard surfaces within site.
- To carry out minor pruning of shrubs and tree branches.
- To keep paths, access points and entrances free of snow and ice to ensure safe passage.
- To undertake specified indoor cleaning duties, including the inside surfaces of windows up to 11 ft (3.3m) from floor level, according to an agreed schedule.
- To carry out the cleaning of lamp shades and light diffusers, taking into account instructions regarding working at heights.
