The Imaging performs over 250,000 examinations a year with 130 staff. The Radiology department assistant plays a pivotal role in assisting with all procedures. It is a wide and varied role, training will be provided in the department. The core hours of the department are 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday with additional weekend lists.

The postholder will
- To work in the Radiology department, assisting radiographers, sonographers and radiologists during non-radiographic examinations, and supporting the day to day running of the radiology department.
- Carry out assigned tasks involving direct patient care in support of the practitioner carrying out the procedure.
- Assisting with patient, patient reception, clinical and administration tasks.
- Assist patients with personal care and hygiene
- Rotating through all areas of Radiology, including: ultrasound, CT, fracture clinic, fluoroscopy, A/E and main department.
- To assist radiographers, radiologists and nursing staff during interventional procedures in CT, ultrasound, fluoroscopy and Interventional suite where appropriate.
- To understand the implications of the Health and Safety at Work Act and ensure a safe working environment for patients, staff, visitors and staff according to the Trusts’ Health and Safety Policy.

Participate in service improvement measures as required by departmental needs

Clinical Responsibilities
- Assisting out-patients and in-patients prior, during and after their examination. Explaining the procedure and supporting the patients where necessary. Deal with upset and distressed patients in a positive and comforting manner.
- Inform clinical team of patients arriving for examination and provide general support before, during and after the examination.
- To be responsible for the day to day running of clinics, in conjunction with the appropriate clinical team, that take place within the radiology departments based at Ashford and St Peter’s hospitals.
- To prepare the patient for diagnostic examinations and fulfil the requirements of correct patient identification, confidentiality and data protection.
- Utilise appropriate moving and handling aids to reduce the risk of injury to the patient and themselves.
- To maintain the highest possible standards of compassionate and professional patient care with particular attention to privacy and dignity.
- Have excellent communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal. Reassure the patient and explain procedures and preparations where necessary. Deal with upset and distressed patients in a positive and comforting manner.
- To deal with confused, distressed and elderly patients in a confidential and professional manner.
- To assist radiologists, sonographers and Radiographers during interventional procedures in CT, X-ray, fluoroscopy and ultrasound where appropriate.
- To clean up after a procedure and prepare room for next examination i.e cleaning biopsy gun and appropriate disposal of sterile and non-sterile equipment.
- Communicate to the practitioner or healthcare professional changes observed in a patient’s condition.
- To clean the ultrasound machines daily and change the filter weekly.
- Organise the transportation of patients to and from their examinations with the portering team.
- Follow departmental protocols to ensure clinical practice and general housekeeping duties (including the cleanliness of equipment and accessories) follow policies and procedures designed to prevent hospital acquired infection.
- Ensure that the patient waiting areas and changing cubicles are kept clean and tidy and clean gowns are available at all times.

Education
- To maintain a personal continuous professional development, training and education portfolio in a proactive manner. Ensure that all competencies are complete and updated to allow assistance in relevant interventional procedures within the department.
- Maintain continued competency in emergency resuscitation techniques, manual handling and fire regulations. To attend the appropriate mandatory training as required by the trust.
