Our host organisation, the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) is one of Europe’s largest research organisations and operates several sites within the UK and at sites abroad. RAL is home to about 2,000 staff that work with a community of more than 10,000 scientists and engineers annually, mainly from the research sector.

We are recruiting a leader for the CLF’s Lasers for Science Division following the retirement of the current incumbent. This position is a senior management role in CLF and STFC, with responsibility for three of the CLF’s five operational laser facilities: Artemis produces ultrafast XUV (10-100’s eV) pulses through high harmonic generation. Vacuum beamlines deliver the light to end-stations for condensed matter physics and gas-phase chemistry. Experiments on Artemis investigate ultrafast dynamics in experiments on gas, liquid and solid materials. Octopus is a suite of advanced laser-based imaging and laser trapping capabilities, including the four main types of super-resolution microscopy, single molecule imaging and tracking, confocal microscopy, light-sheet microscopy, and focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy for life, environmental, and materials sciences. Ultra is a pump-probe ultrafast spectroscopy facility combining laser, detector and sample manipulation technology to probe ultrafast molecular
dynamics for innovative research in the physical and life sciences. Areas of research on Ultra include catalysis, energy, and the dynamics of biological macromolecules. Artemis and Ultra are currently being upgraded with a £17M investment, HiLUX, that will employ new laser and detector technology and advanced data analysis techniques to unlock new science areas and increase output by greatly reducing experimental timescales.

Artemis, Octopus, and Ultra are located in Research Complex at Harwell, a multidisciplinary building housing academic research groups as well as the CLF and other facilities.

**About the Role**

The Division Leader reports to the CLF Director and is responsible for management of the Group Leaders of the three facilities, their safety and resources. The Division has around 30 operational staff members plus postdoctoral researchers, PhD students, and placement students, and has an operational resource budget of approximately £1.2M (excluding staff), and a flexible operational capital budget typically around £0.5M - £0.8M per year. The three facilities deliver around 200 weeks of access to academic and industrial users.

The main responsibilities of the role are to:

- oversee safe, effective operation of Artemis, Octopus, and Ultra
- manage the division budget and secure funds (internal and external) for facility operation and development
- manage operational safety
- work with the CLF Director, the Group Leaders, the CLF leadership team to establish a long-term strategy for your Division, maintaining technological and scientific leadership. This requires engagement with external bodies, particularly the user community of the facilities and UK and international funding agencies
- work with the Group Leaders to attract new academic and industrial user groups to the facilities, and develop collaborative research with partners on the Harwell Campus, in the UK, and internationally
- lead by example, manage and support staff at Line Manager (Group Leaders) and Senior Line Manager level, promoting staff training and development aiming for continuously improving performance
- promote and represent the activities of the Division and the CLF to the scientific community through scientific talks, visits to other institutions, etc
- research, develop, and provide information to the CLF Director on delivery/outputs from your facilities for use with STFC internal boards, CLF Facility Board, and UKRI Facilities Strategic Advisory Group
- undertake your own scientific research, ideally in a collaborative manner, of relevance to CLF’s science interests if desired
