Research Associate in Global Atmospheric Modelling

Cambridge, United Kingdom University of Cambridge Full time

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 5 months in the first instance.

Applications are invited for a 5 month post doctoral position forming part of the METHID2 project (Novel constraints on sources and sinks of methane and carbon monoxide from measurements and modelling of radiocarbon). You will be a key part of the Cambridge group based in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge. The successful applicant will collaborate closely with scientists from Imperial College, the Met Office and the University of Cambridge, focussing on using methane isotopes to constrain the sources and sinks of atmospheric methane. A specific aim of the research project is to provide an independent, top-down method for assessing global and UK methane emissions from the fossil fuel industry.

Applicants must have (or be about to obtain) a PhD in a physical or computational science. Desirable fields include atmospheric science, computational mathmatics, computer science and physics. Experience with UKCA or atmospheric modelling is highly desirable but not essential. Proficiency in interpreting large model or observational datasets using software such as Python, R, or Matlab is desirable. Expertise in stratospheric or tropospheric chemistry is desirable. Proficiency in Fortran and experience running computer code on high performance computers is essential.

The position is available immediately. Interviews are likely to be in July.

Appointment at the Research Associate level is dependent on the award of a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at the Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the award of the PhD has been confirmed.

The Department holds an Athena SWAN silver award for women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine.

The University has a responsibility to ensure that all employees are eligible to live and work in the UK.
