**Job summary**:
Would you embrace the opportunity to support levelling up the economy and improving opportunity across the North of England?

Do you enjoy collaborating with others and developing positive working relationships with a diverse range of contacts?

If so, we have an exciting opportunity available for two Area Leads to join our team and would love to hear from you

**Job description**:
As Area Lead, you will join the Northern Engagement Team within the Department for Transport (DfT) who, in line with the Civil Service’s Beyond Whitehall programme, is expanding its policy presence in the North of England, and you will be a key part of this. You will be responsible for helping to deliver the Regions, Cities and Devolution Directorate’s aims of promoting a place-based approach to achieving better transport outcomes, local and regional economic growth and productivity, and wider Government objectives including growing the economy and levelling up the North of England.

You will be responsible for managing the Department’s relationship with a range of regional stakeholders to represent the Department. You will be responsible for explaining and interpreting policy, supporting local delivery and gathering intelligence. You will utilise this insight to further influence the development of departmental policy and programme delivery, using a combination of virtual and in-person engagement.

You will provide support to the Ministerial team, helping them to deliver on the government’s priorities for the North by providing an excellent service in relation to briefings, parliamentary business, visits in the North, and meeting with high-profile regional stakeholders. You will be responsible for the oversight, management, and leadership of briefing and correspondence relating to your areas of responsibility, including leading on briefing allocation within the team and ensuring deadlines are met in a timely manner.

**Your key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to**:

- Establishing and maintaining robust and productive relationships with senior transport officials in Northern local authorities and other key regional organisations.
- Developing a deep and broad understanding of Northern transport priorities and working with other government departments to secure positive outcomes for the region.
- Working actively with local areas to support departmental programme delivery, such as City Region Sustainable Transport Settlements, Levelling Up Fund, and Bus Service Improvement Plans.
- Working with local authorities and regional stakeholders to support the local implementation of key policy drivers such as transport decarbonisation, Investment Zones, and Local Transport Plans.

**For further information, please see the attached Role Profile**

**Person specification**:
**About you**

You will confidently communicate with a range of internal and external stakeholders, both in writing and verbally, in an articulate and concise manner. You will have great interpersonal skills, enabling you to develop positive relationships.

You will be a proactive and strategic thinker with an understanding of how your work contributes to the wider department’s objectives. You will have the ability to identify risks, issues and opportunities and use your initiative to act on these, but also use judgement to know when to escalate.

You will be a highly organised individual who remains versatile when met with uncertainty. You will comfortably handle multiple conflicting workstreams, with the ability to assess and re-prioritise tasks when required.

**Additional Information**

This role is available to individuals who wish to be spending their office time in Leeds, and we would also expect the individual to be willing to occasionally travel to visit different local authorities throughout the North of England, and alternative DfT offices, predominantly London and Birmingham.

A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.
