We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our large, friendly multi-disciplinary team as an Assistant Technical Officer.

On the job training will be provided where required.

**Main Operational Duties**:

- Daily preparation and maintenance of clinical rooms and clinical equipment.
- Management and control of clinical and non-clinical stock
- General administrative duties

**Main Clinical Duties**:

- Undertake audiology procedures including otoscopy, tympanometry, Pure Tone Audiometry and aural impressions on older children and adults.
- Assist with hearing assessments on younger children under supervision
- Perform hearing aid repairs and replacements

The Children & Young People's Audiology Centre in St Thomas' Hospital is recognised as a comprehensive non-consultant led audiological centre providing a high quality service for the children of South East London. We have developed an innovative specialist hearing assessment service for autistic and complex needs children and have involvement in a number of national and international research projects. The quality of the service has been acknowledged by being awarded BAA team of the year in 2018.

The service is a UKAS accredited medical diagnostic service No. 9980.

**Responsibilities**:
The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of the Assistant Technical Officer role and its purpose within the service; they are not exhaustive and the post holder may be required to undertake additional or alternative administrative and clinical duties and responsibilities commensurate with the level of the post, to support the smooth running of the department.

Operational responsibilities

Prepare clinical rooms for use. This will include switching on and preparation of equipment. Conducting daily calibration checks, flagging any issues or equipment which should be further investigated or sent for repair. Cleaning and maintaining toys and medical equipment.
- Maintain stock levels and restocking of clinical rooms as appropriate.
- To manage general supplies / clinical & non-clinical stock for the team and order as appropriate and to maintain stock of information booklets and order replacements are needed.
- To order hearing aids and earmoulds as needed.
- To maintain the loan hearing aid stock and send any faulty hearing aids for repair.
- Manage telephone and written enquiries from parents, professionals, and others politely, ensuring timely and appropriate action.
- File correspondence, investigations etc in the appropriate section of medical notes
- Carry out general administrative duties i.e. photocopying, opening of post and distributing letters.
- Provide reception cover as required.
- Update patient records on patient management systems as required.
- To maintain the clinical protocol folder.
- To deal with requests for batteries/spare parts and posting them out to families.
- To assist in the maintenance of the facilities and equipment of the Service, in line with departmental protocols and practice, and to report problems to senior staff.
- To assist in the collection and analysis of data for clinical audit, reports and service development proposals as required.

Clinical Responsibilities
- To undertake basic audiology procedures including otoscopy, tympanometry, and aural impressions autonomously.
- To provide stage A calibration of diagnostic Audiology equipment on a daily basis.
- Assist with hearing assessments of older children when a second person is required for play audiometry. Maintaining concentration of a child at optimal levels to complete the test. This may involve counseling and reassurance to parents who may be anxious regarding test compliance and results.
- To undertake Otoscopy and able to identify issues relating to the ear which may require additional intervention or attention. To recognize red flags for other testing and escalate as appropriate.
- To undertake Tympanometry to assess middle ear function. To be aware of any contraindications for completing the test and to be able to differentiate between and understand the limitations of the test. To relay results to the family.
- To undertake earmould impressions for children over 5 years of age who are compliant or under 4 years of age with supervision.
- To undertake hearing device instruction including insertion, management and accessories
- To perform hearing aid repair and maintenance appointments which will include using hearing aid programming software and hardware to replace broken hearing aids, basic repairs to hearing such as replacing earhooks, tubing, issuing batteries to be included
- To perform Hearing Instrument Tests (HITs) to ensure that hearing aids are working optimally or identify ones that need to be repaired.
