**Job summary**:
Are you passionate about protecting the world’s oceans?
Do you thrive on delivering high profile communications campaigns for impact?
The UK Government’s Blue Belt Programme has been instrumental in delivering a target of protecting 4.3 million square km of some of the world’s most precious marine environment - working across 10 UK overseas Territories to safeguard biodiversity, wildlife habitats and ecosystems in some of the remotest places on Earth. As one of the largest marine conservation initiatives of its kind in the world, covering an area of ocean 17 times the size of the UK, the Blue Belt Programme is central to the UK Government’s ambition of leading global action to tackle illegal fishing, climate change and species conservation.
As Communications Lead for Blue Belt Programme, you will play a pivotal role in communicating the ongoing work to underpin this important commitment to global marine protection.
About the role:
We are seeking an experienced and creative communications all-rounder to cover this exciting role. You will be unfazed in delivering excellent results across the breadth of communications disciplines: digital, social, traditional media, stakeholder engagement and government affairs. In return, you’ll join a dynamic, friendly and supportive team, working within the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas), an Executive Agency of Defra and in partnership with the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
The Civil Service is committed to attract, retain and invest in talent wherever it is found. To learn more please see the Civil Service People Plan and the Civil Service Diversity and Inclusion Strategy.
**Job description**:
Your main duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Lead communications for the UK government Blue Belt Programme in a cross departmental team involving three members of staff. Foster excellent working relationships with internal colleagues, external partners, key stakeholders and the FCDO customer to implement communications strategy to ensure timely delivery.
- Work with FCDO, UK Overseas Territories, Cefas, MMO and external stakeholders to ‘horizon scan’ and identify opportunities to raise the visibility of the programme through international awareness raising events/campaigns, conferences/events and internally across Cefas and MMO.
- Develop and implement creative communications strategies and campaigns to promote the programme’s work and achievements. Produce/coordinate innovative and high-quality outputs, such as quarterly and special edition newsletters, annual update brochure, and outreach materials and events.
- Create engaging digital (social media, video) and print content (press notices, blogs, cases studies) campaigns to raise awareness of the programme’s legacy and impact.
- Work with wider Cefas communications team, external communications colleagues including the FCDO, UK Overseas Territory representatives and Defra to amplify the messages of the programme and raise Cefas’ profile within government and respond appropriately to political sensitivities.
- Delivering against the ‘Capacity building and ocean literacy’ theme of the programme to provide direct support to UK Overseas Territories through communications support, training, and design/content support for on-island education and awareness raising resources.
- Represent Blue Belt communications at internal meetings and senior external meetings to gather appropriate content and report on communications progress.
- Some UK and international travel may be required: the current postholder was able to take part in a six week marine survey of St Helena and Ascension Island waters, on board the RRS Discovery to help produce a short video documentary.
- Evaluate and track the impact/success of the programme through monthly communications dashboard against key targets, KPIs. Lead development, production and dissemination of the monthly dashboard.
In addition, Cefas reserves the right to ask staff to take on additional duties and responsibilities which are commensurate with their grade. Team Leaders and management will have a discussion with staff to explain the changes that are to be made. A new job description will be issued if required**.**
