As part of the Family Hub programme across Bedfordshire and Luton, the Infant Feeding Volunteer Coordinator will be responsible for the recruitment, training, management and coordination of infant feeding volunteers - to be known as Infant Feeding Buddies, within community and hospital settings.

The postholder will work with Midwifery, Flying Start, Children’s Centres, and Bedfordshire and Luton Community Services colleagues, to identify suitable environments for Buddies to support and share information with families in both the antenatal and postnatal periods.

This role will aid families to access support and information from Buddy peers, specifically focusing on breastfeeding chest feeding and supporting close and loving relationships and the UNICEF Baby Friendly standards for Children Centres, Maternity and Health Visiting services.

To work in cooperation with the Volunteer Lead to implement relevant national and local policies within both the hospital and community settings measuring the impact through data collection, auditing and other qualitative methods. Demonstrating improvements in service quality, delivery and effectiveness.

To work in collaboration with midwifery and community services in planning the complex Buddy rostering, ensuring Buddies are utilised fully and appropriately, to support and enhance service delivery in a positive way so that their role complements and does not conflict with other roles.

To ensure the Buddies adherence to volunteer policies, the volunteer agreement, complete mandatory training, re compliant with relevant Trust policies such as Data Protection, Patient Confidentiality, Health and Safety and Vulnerable Groups.

Promote the role of the Buddy programme as a positive contribution to the work of the Trusts including identifying additional areas where they could enhance service delivery.

Act as liaison between Buddies and health service staff, Family Hubs and Children Centres to support good joint working practice in order to maximise the quality of service to families.

Ensure that appropriate training is identified, developed and implemented for Buddies to support their safe practice.

The role holder will support Buddies to educate and assist families with evidence based non bias information to enable them to make informed choices about their health and wellbeing, through a range of methods including antenatal classes, hospital wards, clinics, drop in groups and phone contacts to assess and support families.

Ensure that documented risk assessments are carried out for the Buddy support programme and disseminated as appropriate.

Maintain close working links and open complex communication with Trust Volunteer Lead Maternity, Health Visiting, Children’s Centres and Strengthening Family Hubs Infant Feeding Leads.

Contribute to clinical audit and research highlighting unmet needs within the population.

Observe and maintain strict confidentiality with regards to any patient / family / staff records and information in line with the requirements of the Data Protection Act.

To work closely with other professional teams and key stakeholders including service users, statutory and non-statutory organisations.
