An exciting opportunity to support the Heads of Midwifery in the development of the professional midwifery agenda by taking the lead on workstreams such as Infection prevention, maternity support worker development, learning from incidents roll out, development of action plans from Investigation reports, health and safety and education. The post holders will support NUH maternity Improvement journey by supporting both the HOM in Governance and in Workforce and Operations, rotating as required to gain experience and development opportunities.

This role will develop consistency of practice, high standards of care and innovation with a robust quality and safety focus. They will work in partnership with the Directorate and Divisional Senior Leadership Team to ensure the delivery and achievement of the maternity national and regional agenda objectives and contribute to the strategic policies for maternity services.

The posts are a key role in the senior midwifery leadership team and will support the Heads of Midwifery and Director of Midwifery to champion high quality, safe and compassionate care for women, birthing people and their families.

Main duties of the job

Reporting to and in partnership with the Head of Midwifery the post holder will ensure the effective implementation of a comprehensive and systematic approach to midwifery workforce developments reflecting Birthrate Plus methodology.

Support the Director of Midwifery/ Head of Midwifery in ensuring that all aspects of clinical risks relating to workforce are robustly and effectively managed.

Promote a just culture in which incident reporting and learning from incidents is accepted as “business as usual” and recognised as a vehicle for quality improvement and the provision of safe services.

Champion the continuous maternity service improvement cycle initiatives by developing programmes in partnership with the quality and safety teams and practice education team, including the Professional Midwifery Advocate (PMA) teams.

Educate, support, and advise senior managers and clinicians responsible for carrying out investigations of incidents and near misses including identification and implementation of action plans and ensure measures are in place to prevent incident recurrence.

To coordinate the monitoring and review of midwifery/maternity complaints, incidents and clinical risks relating to workforce. Developing, and monitoring action plans, in consultation with the Head of Midwifery.

Deputise for the Head of Midwifery as required.

Training & Qualifications

Essential criteria
- Registered Midwife
- Management/Leadership qualification or relevant experience

Desirable criteria
- Masters degree or equivalent post basic training
- Leadership training/qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
- Established Midwifery and Nursing leadership skills including human resources experience
- Substantial experience working operationally/clinically as a Senior Midwife
- Substantial experience of budgetary management at a senior level
- Significant experience of working within, and leading multi-disciplinary teams
- Extensive experience of contributing to development of safe, effective and efficient midwifery care pathways, including analysis of critical incidents

Desirable criteria
- Engagement in Regional/National developments in relation to maternity services.

Communication and Relationahip Skills

Essential criteria
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and diplomacy skills
- In depth knowledge of current issues facing Maternity, Gynaecology and Neonatal services at a local and national level

Analytical and Judgement Skills

Essential criteria
- Demonstrated capability to act upon incomplete information, using experience to make inferences and decision making
