Truro, United Kingdom Cornwall Council Full time

**Transport Strategy, Policy and Safety in Cornwall**

**Make a difference - to communities in Cornwall**

The Environment & Connectivity service is looking for a passionate individual who wants to make a positive difference to residents and visitors of Cornwall.

Transport faces quite significant challenges and radical change is required. The most pressing issue is the recognition that there is a climate change crisis and the urgent need to take bold actions now if Cornwall Council is to meet its commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030. The Prime Minister also announced at the G7 summit (in Cornwall 2021) support for Cornwall becoming the first carbon neutral area in the UK. We also need to deliver on our vision to eradicate death and serious injury from our roads supporting an accessible, healthier and safer Cornwall. By 2030, we want to reduce the number of people fatality and seriously injured by 50% with ultimate goal of zero in future. We have both a moral and statutory duty to do all we can to drive this positive change. Death or serious injury can have long lasting impacts on families, friends and the wider community.

If you have the vision to drive the development of transport strategy, policy as well as managing capital delivery programmes targeting road safety and active travel outcomes, then we want to hear from you. This is a challenging role, delivering on a number of Council priorities and requires an individual who can provide leadership both at strategic and operational level.

We recently refreshed our Cornwall Transport Plan 2030 and our fundamental vision is that “Transport in Cornwall will be excellent and carbon neutral. Our transport system will connect people, communities, businesses and services in a way that enhances quality of life, is reliable, efficient, safe, healthy and inclusive. People will choose to travel in ways that will have a low impact upon the environment and other people.

You will be responsible for driving this vision and ensuring deliver on the outcomes set within it. You will directly manage a team of individuals leading a comprehensive work portfolio, primarily spanning transport strategy, policy, delivery of community based transport improvements and a dedicated road safety programme.

Cornwall Council is a partner of Vision Zero South West Partnership a collection of organisations dedicated to driving safety outcomes across the combined road network of Cornwall and Devon. Within this role, you will be responsible for working collaboratively with partners to deliver agreed projects of VZSW.

Cornwall is one of the best places in the country to live, work and bring up a family. We are committed to supporting the wellbeing of our staff and we recognise that they need a good work/life balance as well as supportive leadership and support in the workplace. Cornwall’s location and landscape offers unique opportunities for a healthier, happier way of life.

Fairness and inclusion are at the heart of our vision for Cornwall. In order to best serve our communities, we are striving to achieve a diverse workforce that is inclusive of all backgrounds, cultures and identities e.g. race, disability, sex, gender, age, religion and sexual orientation. We are an equal opportunities and Disability Confident employer, and we will assess applicants on their merits.

Cornwall Council is committed to safeguarding and following safer recruitment principles to help make sure our staff and volunteers are suitable to work with children, young people and adults at risk. It’s a vital part of creating a safe and positive environment and making a commitment to keeping all service users safe from harm.

Whilst the location/work-base for this role has been specified, our evolving ways of working mean that the role may require you to also work remotely (e.g. from home/other locations). We will discuss this with you during the recruitment process.
