The Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is responsible for providing visible and transformational clinical and professional leadership of nursing, midwifery and allied health professional staff. The role has executive accountability for patient experience and will be expected to work closely with the Chief Medical Officer in relation to patient safety and clinical effectiveness, as well as being the executive professional lead for maternity and children’s services. The CNO will make an important contribution towards developing, promoting and delivering the Trust’s strategic vision for nursing, midwifery and allied health professional services. This includes enabling diversity in all its forms, promoting staff wellbeing and creating a just culture of learning and improvement.

Key Dimensions

Provide visible and inspiring clinical and professional leadership for the nursing, midwifery and allied healthcare professional workforce, acting as a role model for the Trust’s values, behaviours and professional standards.

In conjunction with the other Executive Directors, develop and maintain systems of clinical governance which ensure the
Trust places patient safety at the heart of the organisation.

As a voting Board Executive Director, be collectively responsible for the direction and performance of the Trust and for
the decisions made by the Trust Board.
Ensure that the Trust adheres to appropriate policy and practice where required in the management of nursing,
midwifery and allied healthcare professionals.

Provide professional advice and support to the Integrated Care System, (ICS), and Acute Provider Collaborative, (APC), in
South East London, ensuring that relevant nursing leadership is in place to support the ICS and APC in meeting patient
and population needs.
