Youth Support Worker

We are looking to build a team of reliable and committed sessional workers, for between 1-3 sessions a week. Term time, each session will usually be up to 3 hours and predominately the sessions run on Monday, Wednesday and Friday between the hours of 3.30-8:30pm. Flexibility will be required outside of term time.

Pay £11.00 an hour

North Avenue Youth Centre is based in Chelmsford and works with young people aged 8 - 18 (25 with additional needs) in the area. We aim to engage young people in a range of activities both within the Youth Centre and in the community. Through these activities North Avenue Youth Centre aims to develop meaningful and positive relationships with young people, based on mutual trust and respect, helping young people reach their full potential. We also work out in the local community, on Detached work, building up a relationship with young people who may not access the centre. Previous experience working with young people would be beneficial but not essential

Responsible to: Youth Centre Manager

A Youth Support Worker will:
- Work as part of a team, with other staff and volunteers, under the direction of the Youth Centre Manager to develop and deliver a varied programme of activities for the young people, both through centre-based and detached youth work. This includes activities such as crafts; sports; drama; gardening; young leader training; topical group work and other projects
- Be part of the delivery team for detached youth work and undertake any necessary training in this area. This includes working with and meeting new young people in the places they choose to be, such as in the local parks and streets
- Prepare and supervise planned activities as agreed with the Youth Centre Manager
- Be a responsible and positive role model for young people. Interact with the young people in a positive way, ensuring they are listened to Encourage young people to join in with activities, engage in meaningful discussion and contribute to planning of events and sessions
- Work in the tuck shop serving refreshment, taking money and ensuring the kitchen is left tidy
- Work at the entrance taking admissions, ensuring the young people sign in for the sessions
- Work with young people to promote a safe and unprejudiced environment
- Carry out other responsible activities as requested by the Youth Centre Manager or the administrator
- Follow the code of conduct at all times, promoting the best outcomes and experiences for young people

- Be committed to enabling young people to empower themselves and achieve their potential

- Leadership skills and strong teamworking
- The ability to ensure relevant Health and Safety under the guidance of the youth centre manager
- Be observant, patient and enthusiastic
- Have the ability to work as part of a team with the other members of staff and the volunteers
- Possess good listening skills and the ability to communicate and engage well with young people
- Have the ability to work on own initiative
