Post Doctoral Research Associate
An exciting opportunity for a fixed term research associate to work full time on a Diabetes UK-funded project to investigate the effectiveness of a therapeutic intervention to enable drivers with diabetic peripheral neuropathy to drive safely for longer. This will involve working with a collaborative team of researchers at Manchester Met, University of Manchester and the Manchester Diabetes Clinic towards an evaluation of visual feedback during simulated driving as an effective intervention to counter the impaired use of the accelerator pedal that results from sensory and proprioceptive loss due to diabetic peripheral neuropathy.
**The Role**:
This project will be focussed on measuring improved use of the accelerator (avoidance of ‘aggressive' or unhelpfully powerful acceleration) and safe driving over repeated visits to the Manchester Met driving simulator in a 6-month period to see how benefits of visual feedback training accumulate over time (at first, third, and final visit). This project will involve working with participants who are living with diabetes, and with peripheral neuropathy. Practical skills in taking physiological measurements, and running sessions on the driving simulator will be needed. Successful data acquisition, and subsequent analysis using software packages will be a central part of the work.
You will work within the Department of Life Sciences and the Manchester Institute of Sport, which provides state of the art research facilities including the driving simulator.
The Faculty of Science and Engineering is an exciting and dynamic environment in which to conduct cutting edge research.
**Qualification we require**:
You must have a PhD in a human movement science-related field.
**Application Requirements**:
Experience of the following would be advantageous:
- Experience in working with participants living with diabetes
- Knowledge of human movement science and motor control
- Experience and proficiency in statistical analyses
- Interest in medical fitness to drive
Evidence of good practice in working with participants, good communication skills and an ability to thoroughly document and evaluate data are all essential.
**To Apply**:
Please submit your CV and Cover Letter
