Research Associate in Microvascular Physiology

Manchester, United Kingdom The University of Manchester Full time

**Background**

An exciting opportunity exists to carry out 12 months of post-doctoral research in microvascular physiology investigating the impact of septic shock on small artery function. This position is co-ordinated across the laboratories of Dr Chris Stanley at the Heart Research Institute (HRI), University of Sydney, Australia and Dr’s Adam Greenstein and Harry Pritchard’s small artery group at the University of Manchester, UK. The post, which will be based within the Division of Cardiovascular Sciences at the University of Manchester, is funded from a grant from the UK branch of the HRI and as a condition of funding is open to UK citizens only.

**Overall Purpose of the Job**

The research follows on from the recent work of Dr Stanley’s Nature 2019. 566; p548 and Nat Commun 2021. 12; p6626 and will use cutting edge vascular physiology techniques as used in Dr’s Greenstein and Pritchard’s lab’s (Circulation Research 2021. 128:p1279, PNAS 2020. 116;p21874 and Hypertension 2020. 75; p539). The appointed person will work with microvascular arteries taken from models of septic shock to understand how disease pathology changes membrane potential and calcium signalling. Such changes are hypothesised to drive disease-associated sustained vasodilation, and fatal hypotension. This research will utilise electrophysiology of freshly isolated vascular smooth muscle cells and calcium imaging of pressurised arteries. As well as leading a project, the successful post-doctoral researcher will also be given fantastic opportunities to collaborate on other projects within the lab and/or within the host institute.

**What you will get in return**:

- Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
- Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
- Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
- Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
- Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers
