Job description
The primary role of the Investigations Officer is to support the Investigations Manager in conducting research which supports the development of CAN’s conversations with advertisers around the issues embedded in its seven manifestos.
**Our Story**
The Conscious Advertising Network (CAN) is a coalition of more than 150 advertisers, agencies and civil society groups, all working together to help the ethics catch up with the technology of modern advertising. Members of the coalition include brands such as SSE, GSK, Virgin Media O2 and British Gas, network media agencies Group M, Havas Media and Omnicom Media Group, and civil society groups including the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Global Disinformation Index and the Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD).
Our mission is to create a safe, inclusive and commercially viable information ecosystem for advertisers and society that supports quality journalism and content, diversity of media and scientific consensus. Our interventions embed human rights within commercial and political decision making in relation to advertising.
Our manifestos cover seven main areas; hate speech, misinformation, diversity and inclusion, children’s wellbeing, informed consent, advertising fraud and sustainability. The manifestos are designed for advertisers and agencies to adhere to and provide practical steps to make changes in their organisation.
**Core Duties and Responsibilities**
- Assist the Investigations Manager in the design and managing of investigative projects which support CAN’s mission.
- Unearth new areas where advertising is impacting human rights.
- To support the Investigations Manager in creating communications materials for the advertising industry and trade and national press i.e Member briefings, press releases and social media comms.
- Work in collaboration with the Investigations Manager, Founders, and the broader advocacy team in creating content to support our work with platforms and advertising bodies
- Work alongside the Investigations Manager to spot and identify global and national news stories
- Awareness of, and regular reporting on relevant research bodies and initiatives/ projects they are undertaking
**Measurement of Success**
- Successfully working alongside the Investigations Manager in the delivery of robust and interesting research projects, with partners that genuinely changes the narrative
- Discovery of new issues and talking points
**Skills and experience**
- Experience working in the fields of investigative research and/or investigative journalism
- A proven track record of investigative research achieving impact, either through journalism or the production of content which has improved industry awareness on a given issue
- Experience of cross-border investigation projects
- Fluent written and spoken English and the ability to produce clear, well-sourced and accurate briefings and summaries, or news articles
- Ability to work both in a team and independently
- Fast-learning self-starter comfortable to work in a fast-paced and wide-ranging work environment
- A strong understanding of investigative journalism
**Other information**
- The role will entail hybrid working, typically 1-2 days per week in a London based office
**Package**
- Competitive salary & statutory pension contribution (£28k depending on experience)
- 12 months Fixed Term Contract with a view being extended
- 23 days holiday
