The post holder will assist the team of speech and language therapists to deliver a high standard of care to patients. This will involve undertaking assessments and treatments for patients that have been deemed appropriate for Assistant intervention, with case management and support available via indirect and direct contact with a registered speech and language therapist.

To assist in the delivery of high standards of health care and support patients within their community setting by following prescribed packages of care.

To carry out screening assessments and more detailed assessments to assess communication skills, with access to supervision from a speech and language therapist.

To carry out treatment plans with patients who have communication difficulties with access to supervision from a speech and language therapist.

T o undertake a significant clinical caseload as delegated by a therapist providing care to patients with both communication and swallowing difficulties.

To carry out protocol led screening assessments of patients suspected to have swallowing problems.

To seek advice from supervising speech and language therapist if the patient’s clinical condition indicates an adjustment of treatment plan.

To liaise with patients, carers and other health professionals on issues regarding communication and swallowing to ensure effective treatment of patients under the supervision of the speech and language therapist.

To represent the speech and language therapy department at multi-disciplinary teams’ meetings or case conferences when appropriate and to communicate patient’s progress to the supervising speech and language therapist.

To carry out protocol led triages of new referrals in order to review for appropriateness and to assign clinical priority, liaising with therapists as required.
